Hafley ditches Boston College to join Packers as DC.

The Green Bay Packers have made a major coaching move, hiring Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley as their new defensive coordinator. This surprising decision was announced on Wednesday and has brought excitement to the team and the Green Bay community. Hafley, along with his wife Gina and their daughters Hope and Leah, will be joining the Packers family.

Hafley has had a successful coaching career, with a notable track record of developing players at all levels. He spent the last four seasons at Boston College, where he achieved a 22-26 record with the team. In 2023, the team had a 7-6 record. One of the reasons behind Hafley’s move to the NFL is reportedly his dissatisfaction with the current state of college football. He wants to focus on coaching football in a league that prioritizes the game itself, rather than other aspects such as fundraising and recruiting.

Throughout his career, Hafley has also gained experience as an assistant in the NFL. He previously coached the defensive backs for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012 and 2013, followed by stints with the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers. In 2019, he served as Ohio State’s co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach before taking on the Boston College job.

The Packers have been in search of a new defensive coordinator since parting ways with Joe Barry on Jan. 24. The team’s defense has lacked consistency under Barry’s leadership, ranking 17th in yards allowed over the past two seasons. They also placed 23rd in EPA/play allowed and 10th in points. With the addition of Hafley, the Packers hope to strengthen their defense and improve their overall performance.

Under the guidance of head coach Matt LaFleur and with promising quarterback Jordan Love, the Packers have shown potential. They finished the season with a 9-8 record and made it to the divisional round. The team is determined to build on this success and make a strong impact in the upcoming seasons.
