Isack Hadjar of Campos Racing navigates the circuit during the FIA Formula 2 Championship in Melbourne, Australia, on March 22, 2024. Hadjar expressed increased confidence in his performance as Campos Racing emerged as the leading team in the mid-season testing frame of Formula 2 held in Barcelona. The Red Bull junior driver secured his first win of the season in Australia, but a penalty in the Sprint race resulted in a drop in the standings. Alongside Red Bull junior teammate Josep María Martí, Campos Racing consistently clocked the fastest lap times throughout the three-day testing session at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. According to Hadjar, while they may not have the fastest raw speed, they are among the top performers. This gives him a lot of confidence and he has felt this way since joining the team. He is able to compete at the front of the pack, which is a rare and positive experience for a driver. Hadjar believes his plan is working and he feels amazing. His confidence has returned, allowing him to drive better than ever. He no longer doubts anything from the team and can focus solely on delivering strong performances on the track. During testing, both Hadjar and Martí consistently set faster lap times compared to last season, improving by almost a full second.
In 2024, the latest iteration of Formula 2 cars was introduced, featuring improvements in speed, mass, sustainability, and more.
Despite uncertainties surrounding the next generation of cars, Campos Racing finds itself trailing Championship leaders Rodin Motorsport by 18 points heading into the fourth round at Imola.
Hadjar is gradually closing the gap to the top three drivers in the Drivers’ Standings, being only seven points behind the third-placed Dennis Hauger.
With an impressive time of 1:23.139, Hadjar feels a wave of confidence after three days of testing, preparing him for the next round.
The Formula 2 testing schedule has undergone a change compared to the previous season, now taking place after the first three rounds in anticipation of the European stage.
This structural change grants teams an additional and vital opportunity to gather updated data, as well as utilize the accumulated data from the first three rounds.
Both Hadjar and Martí claim that Campos Racing has made the most of this opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the new generation of cars. Martí commented: “We believe we have understood the underlying principles of this new car and its requirements quite effectively. Our car has shown impressive speed on all three tracks and on four different tire compounds, which is undoubtedly a positive aspect.”
“We know that if we hit the track with our current setup, we will be competitive and fight at the front. We have a solid foundation, but we also aim to be more ambitious. Although some teams may not have a distinct advantage over us, they are on equal footing at the moment. Our goal is to progress and we are working diligently to achieve that goal,” Martí added.
The drivers eagerly await the next stage in Imola, scheduled to take place from May 17 to 19.
