Haas Unveils VF-24 Car Design for 2024 Season with Pessimistic Prediction

Haas has made history as the first Formula 1 team to reveal its initial car design for the 2024 season. However, the American team has done so with a pessimistic outlook. With long-serving team boss Guenther Steiner no longer at the helm, Haas has opted for a subtle evolution of its black-and-white livery design from the previous year.

The VF-24 will feature more black coloring, particularly noticeable in the nosecone area and at the top of the sidepods. Emphasizing its American identity, the car proudly displays a large USA flag on the nosecone. Haas has been confirmed as the sole USA operation on the grid after F1 rejected Michael Andretti’s bid to enter the championship.

The VF-24 will make its debut during a Silverstone shakedown on February 11. The renders of the car reveal a pushrod front suspension and pullrod rear suspension, similar to the design of its predecessor, the VF-23. The front wing and highly-ramped sidepod profile continue the trend of the significant upgrade Haas introduced during last year’s United States Grand Prix.

Ayao Komatsu, the new team boss who replaced Steiner, describes the Austin-spec VF-23 as a “preview” for the VF-24. He explains that the VF-24 is a more refined version of the concept, as it was not limited by the initial design constraints of the VF-23. However, Komatsu acknowledges that the Austin upgrade did not drastically improve Haas’s performance in 2023. In fact, he warns that the launch-spec of the VF-24 may still leave the team at the back of the grid or even last during the Bahrain Grand Prix.

Creating the Austin-spec VF-23 was a valuable exercise for understanding the issues with the car’s fading race pace. However, Komatsu admits that focusing on the Austin package meant that the VF-24 launch car may not be as advanced as it could have been. He acknowledges the competition’s ability to find performance and hopes that the VF-24 will provide a better foundation for Haas.

In addition to Steiner, tech director Simone Resta also left Haas before the new season. Instead of hiring externally, Haas has promoted its chief designer, Andrea De Zordo, to take over Resta’s position. Komatsu praises De Zordo’s communication skills and engagement with the team. Haas will fill De Zordo’s previous role internally and has established a new position of performance director, which will be filled by Damien Brayshaw, a former Ferrari engineer who has been promoted from head of vehicle performance.

With these changes and a cautious outlook, Haas hopes to improve its performance in the upcoming season.

HAAS’S NEW F1 TECHNICAL DIRECTOR PROMOTED FROM WITHIN

In a surprising move, Haas has announced that their new Formula 1 technical director will be Andrea De Zordo. This promotion from within the team shows their confidence in De Zordo’s abilities. However, it’s important to note that De Zordo is no stranger to the world of Grand Prix racing, as they have extensive experience in the field.
