Haas Scrambles for a Rookie as Oliver Bearman Loses Abu Dhabi Test Eligibility

Haas finds itself in a tricky position for the post-season Formula 1 test in Abu Dhabi, as Oliver Bearman is no longer eligible to participate as a rookie. The 18-year-old British driver has exceeded the two-race limit for rookie classification after substituting for Kevin Magnussen twice this season.

Bearman’s brief but impressive stints for Haas and Ferrari, including his late call-up for the São Paulo Grand Prix and earlier debut in Azerbaijan, solidified his standing as a promising talent. However, those opportunities now exclude him from taking part in the crucial rookie-specific testing slot at Yas Marina.

Who Fills the Void?

Haas already confirmed incoming driver Esteban Ocon will occupy the senior driver slot during the test. With Bearman disqualified from rookie status, the team’s options to fulfill the requirement are slim:

  1. Pietro Fittipaldi
The team’s reserve driver is a likely candidate. Fittipaldi, who participated in two Grands Prix during the 2020 season, still qualifies as a rookie under current regulations.
  2. Dino Beganovic
The Ferrari Academy prospect, fresh out of Formula 3, could be drafted. However, his lack of experience at higher levels might make him a less favorable option.
  3. Toyota Partnership Drivers
Thanks to Haas’ technical alliance with Toyota, the team may borrow a driver from the Japanese marque for this test. This alternative, while unconventional, could help Haas meet the rookie requirement without disrupting its future plans.

Bearman’s Future at Haas

Although Bearman misses out on this test, Haas Team Principal Ayao Komatsu confirmed that the teenager remains integral to their development program. He will be back in action in the Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) session scheduled for January 2025.

Ferrari’s Test Strategy and Lewis Hamilton’s Delay

Ferrari could theoretically provide Bearman a lifeline by naming him as their senior driver for the post-season test, but the Scuderia seems more likely to deploy its roster of juniors. Meanwhile, Ferrari’s blockbuster 2025 recruit, Lewis Hamilton, won’t make his highly anticipated debut with the team in Abu Dhabi. Instead, Hamilton will wrap up his obligations with Mercedes for the remainder of 2024 and is expected to debut in Ferrari colors during a private test early next year.

What’s Next for Haas?

With the rookie slot still unfilled, Haas is racing against time to secure a replacement. Fittipaldi remains the front-runner given his familiarity with the team, but any last-minute decision will add pressure to Haas’ preparations for the 2025 season. As the post-season test looms, it underscores the growing complexities of managing rookies in a competitive and tightly regulated sport.
