The 2024 Formula 1 season was a year of breakthroughs and bittersweet moments for Haas, as the American team exceeded expectations by finishing seventh in the Constructors’ Championship. Despite narrowly missing out on P6 to Alpine, team principal Ayao Komatsu reflected on the season as a major step forward for the team, particularly in terms of car development and consistent performance.
The Alpine Challenge
A double podium for Alpine in Brazil, yielding a massive 33 points at Interlagos, ultimately secured their sixth-place finish. While this late-season surge dashed Haas’s hopes of P6, Komatsu emphasized that success in the championship is about cumulative performance across all 24 races.
“Of course, we were very disappointed not to get P6, but we gave it everything,” Komatsu told SiriusXM. “It doesn’t just happen at one event; it happens over the course of the season. Considering where we’ve come from, we’ve done a very good job to get to P7 with so many points.”
Historic Progress for Haas
Haas notched 58 points over the season, with 27 points coming in the last quarter—a significant improvement compared to previous years when the team struggled to score late in the season due to a lack of car development. The highlights of this progression included a competitive car in Abu Dhabi, where Nico Hülkenberg was just eight hundredths of a second off P2 in qualifying.
“The Abu Dhabi qualifying session was the closest we’ve been to pole position – three tenths – and Nico was only eight hundredths from P2,” Komatsu added. “So there’s lots to be positive about.”
Pre-Season Targets Exceeded
At the start of the year, Komatsu and Haas set a modest goal of finishing eighth in the Constructors’ Championship, recognizing the challenges they faced as the smallest team on the grid with limited resources.
“100%, because the official target for the team was P8,” Komatsu explained. “We are the smallest team, we started this year’s car late, and stopped for a couple of months to do the Austin upgrade last year. How are we going to get to P8? That was the challenge we set ourselves.”
With P7 secured ahead of Red Bull, Williams, and Stake, Haas outperformed this expectation by a clear margin. The achievement was a testament to the team’s hard work and strategic upgrades.
Looking Ahead: Building on Momentum
While falling just short of Alpine underscores the challenge Haas faces in breaking into the midfield battle consistently, the team has shown that it can develop throughout a season—a critical step for long-term competitiveness.
As Haas continues to grow under Komatsu’s leadership, the lessons from 2024 provide a solid foundation for targeting even greater achievements in 2025. Whether it’s maximizing car performance or executing race strategies, Haas has proven it can punch above its weight and deliver exciting results.
“The boys and girls did an amazing job, so I’m very pleased,” Komatsu concluded.
Verdict: A Year of Growth, a Future of Promise
The 2024 season will go down as a pivotal year for Haas, not only for exceeding pre-season targets but also for demonstrating the potential for sustained competitiveness. With renewed confidence, the team is poised to take another leap forward as it eyes the increasingly competitive midfield battle in 2025.
