Haas Racing Eyes Yuki Tsunoda for 2027: A Potential Comeback for the Japanese Star?

In a surprising turn of events, Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu has ignited speculation by not ruling out the possibility of signing Yuki Tsunoda for the 2027 Formula 1 season. After a tumultuous stint with Red Bull, where he struggled to make his mark alongside the formidable Max Verstappen, Tsunoda finds himself on the sidelines as a reserve driver for the upcoming season. But could Haas be the team to revive his F1 career?

Tsunoda’s tenure with Red Bull came crashing down at the end of 2025, as he managed to garner just 30 points across 22 races. This lackluster performance led to his replacement by rising star Isack Hadjar, leaving Tsunoda to ponder his future in the elite racing world. Yet, despite this setback, he remains determined to follow in the footsteps of Alex Albon, who also faced challenges before making a successful return to F1.

The Haas squad had previously shown interest in Tsunoda back in 2024, but Red Bull secured his services before they could make a move. Instead, the American team opted for Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon. With the future ever-changing in Formula 1, and Bearman potentially eyeing a return to Ferrari, coupled with Ocon’s expiring contract, Tsunoda could once again be on Haas’ radar.

When questioned about the potential acquisition of Tsunoda, Komatsu remained noncommittal yet open. “I can’t comment on his future. Obviously, he’s not our driver,” he stated to media, including Motorsport Week. He emphasized the need for a strong performance in 2026, saying, “Our best position… is to have a competitive ’26 season. That’s our focus.”

As the 2027 driver market heats up, Tsunoda’s ties to Honda could complicate matters. However, Koji Watanabe, President of Honda Racing Corporation, has downplayed concerns regarding Haas’ partnership with rival automotive giant Toyota, insisting, “No problem. They are not Team Toyota.” This statement leaves the door ajar for a potential Tsunoda-Haas collaboration, should the circumstances align.

With the driver market poised for upheaval and the 2026 regulations set to shake things up, the question remains: Will Haas take a chance on Tsunoda and help him reclaim his rightful place in Formula 1? As the clock ticks down to the 2027 season, all eyes will be on the Haas headquarters to see if they make a bold move to resurrect Tsunoda’s F1 career. This potential partnership could be the spark that reignites the Japanese driver’s ambitions and alters the landscape of Formula 1 for years to come.
