Fernando Alonso, the ageless titan of Formula 1, has seen it all. Two World Championships, 32 grand prix victories, and a legacy spanning over two decades. But as F1 barrels toward 2026, the Spaniard’s transformation off the track is stealing the spotlight. Guenther Steiner, former Haas team principal and now a sharp-tongued commentator, has compared Alonso’s newfound composure to that of Lewis Hamilton, calling it a cornerstone of their enduring brilliance.

A New Fernando Alonso: Ego Reined in, Results Maximized

Steiner, in his book Unfiltered, praised Alonso’s ability to channel his once-volatile ego into a formidable weapon. The 43-year-old, known as much for his blistering speed as his fiery relationships with teams like McLaren and Ferrari, has softened his edges since returning to F1 in 2021.

“This is just my opinion,” Steiner writes, “but in addition to winning the World Endurance Championship and two Le Mans titles, Fernando learned how to make his ego work for him, which perhaps he didn’t do so well in the years before. Look at him now—quiet, self-assured, and immaculate off the track.”

Steiner likened Alonso’s evolution to that of Lewis Hamilton, noting how both veterans channel their emotional and physical energies entirely into delivering on race day. “He’s very much like Lewis in that respect,” Steiner stated, underscoring the Spaniard’s growth.

From Stormy Past to Calm Present

Alonso’s career has been a saga of brilliance marred by internal friction. His single season with McLaren in 2007, amid the infamous Spygate scandal, ended in flames. Ferrari’s public rebuke in 2013 after he cheekily wished for “someone else’s car” on his birthday became a symbol of his strained relationships.

Yet, since returning to the grid with Renault (now Alpine) and later switching to Aston Martin, Alonso has flipped the script. Eight podiums in 2023 showcased his unrelenting drive, and the transition to Aston Martin’s Honda partnership and Adrian Newey’s designs in 2026 gives him a legitimate shot at his long-coveted third World Championship.

The Hamilton-Alonso Parallel: Rivals Turned Mirrors

The comparison to Hamilton is particularly intriguing. Once fierce rivals, they’ve grown into symbols of resilience and adaptability. Both have mellowed, allowing their experience and precision to dictate results over raw aggression. For Alonso, this transformation could not have come at a better time.

2026: The Final Chapter?

With a contract extending to 2026, Alonso’s career may finally have an end date—or not. His long-time ally Flavio Briatore hinted that the Aston Martin star might walk away after 2026 but left the door ajar for a possible continuation.

“If you ask me, our last year will be 2026 for the moment,” Briatore said. “But with Fernando, you never know. He’s still qualifying and racing well, and his determination is unmatched.”

For Alonso, it’s clear the hunger hasn’t waned. Whether battling for 10th or first, he remains relentless, an icon unwilling to fade into obscurity.

A Legacy in Focus

Fernando Alonso’s journey from volatile genius to composed veteran epitomizes the evolution of an all-time great. As F1 gears up for a generational shift in 2026, Alonso’s ability to adapt—both emotionally and technically—ensures his name will continue to resonate long after he steps out of the cockpit.
