Great Wall Motors continues to strengthen its presence in the robust SUV segment with the update of the Tank 700 for 2026. However, despite the impressive numbers on paper, this model raises an intriguing question: can an off-road vehicle with nearly 900 horsepower really be fast?

Controversial design and questionable identity

The new Great Wall Tank 700 maintains a strong visual presence — but not a consensual one.

The inspiration seems clear:

  • robust lines in the style of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class
  • compact proportions reminiscent of the Suzuki Jimny

The result is a muscular SUV, with an aggressive aesthetic, but which may divide opinions, especially due to the appearance of an exaggerated “body kit.”

New hybrid version with impressive numbers

The big news is in the top-of-the-line Hi4-Z version, which features a highly powerful plug-in hybrid solution.

The system combines:

  • 2.0 turbo engine with 248 hp
  • electric motor integrated into the transmission with 288 hp
  • rear electric motor

Total combined power: 864 hp

A figure that rivals supercars — including references like the Lamborghini Temerario.

Relevant electric range

The model integrates a 56.1 kWh battery, allowing for up to 190 km of range in 100% electric mode.

Power does not mean speed

Despite the impressive numbers, real performance tells another story:

  • 0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds

A value similar to that of a conventional hot hatch, clearly conditioned by the weight and dimensions of the vehicle.

Surprising consumption (in theory)

In hybrid mode, the brand announces:

  • 1.16 l/100 km with a fully charged battery
  • 8.45 l/100 km with a depleted battery

Values that reflect the potential of electrification, although they depend heavily on actual usage.

More off-road focused version

For those who prioritize off-road capabilities, there is the Hi4-T variant, which takes a different approach:

  • V6 3.0 engine with 355 hp
  • 174 hp electric motor
  • 9-speed automatic transmission

Despite being less powerful, it maintains the same acceleration time and gains off-road capability with:

  • lockable differentials at the front, center, and rear

An SUV that redefines priorities

The Tank 700 does not intend to be a sports car — despite the power. Its focus is on:

  • off-road capability
  • robustness
  • hybrid technology

The new strategy of Chinese manufacturers

Great Wall Motors follows the trend of many Chinese manufacturers:

  • offering advanced technology
  • combining high power with competitive prices
  • to challenge traditional brands

A giant with its own identity… or excessive inspiration?

The Tank 700 well represents the current moment of the Chinese industry: technically impressive, ambitious, but still searching for a completely original design identity.
