The National Republican Guard (GNR) begins on Monday, August 5, the road inspection operation “RoadPol – Speed”, which will take place throughout the national territory, “on roads with the highest incidence of accidents”.
In a statement, the GNR clarifies that the campaign will run until Sunday, August 11, and “aims to promote road safety, with a focus on speeding”.
In a statement, the GNR reminds that speeding is “still one of the main causes of serious road accidents in Portugal, either because it reduces the driver’s reaction time to deal with an unforeseen event or because it worsens the consequences due to the greater violence of the impact”.
Excessive speed is also “the most common offense in all European countries, and is also recognized throughout Europe as the main cause of death on the roads”, it adds.
In 2023, the GNR recorded a total of 84,601 traffic accidents, of which at least 3,447 were likely caused by excessive speed.
With this action, the GNR also aims to raise awareness among drivers about the importance of adopting safer behaviors, “aiming at promoting road safety and safeguarding human lives”.
