Similar to Audi, Porsche also had aspirations to enter the world of Formula 1, but they had a different approach in mind.
The popularity of F1 has been skyrocketing worldwide since the takeover in [year]. As a result, there has been a surge in demand from brands and car manufacturers to join the paddock and take advantage of the sport’s growth. Porsche was also enticed to become a part of the F1 grid in collaboration with [partner], but unfortunately, negotiations fell through. Consequently, the German automaker has now decided to abandon its ambition of joining the pinnacle of motorsports.
Porsche used to be involved in F1 as a manufacturer. They had been a part of the championship ladder since 1957 and produced cars for the F2 championship. However, their only triumph in the top tier of racing came in 1962, and they later withdrew from the season due to the exorbitant operational costs. In an attempt to rectify their past mistakes and capitalize on the growth of the series, Porsche made an offer to enter the championship by acquiring equity in existing teams.
Additionally, they came close to forming a partnership with Red Bull before [partner] entered the picture. However, the collaboration between the Austrian and German powerhouses did not progress due to Porsche’s excessive demands.
Nevertheless, the German manufacturer did not give up and persisted in pursuing their dream. They continued discussions with various other teams on the grid but were unable to secure a path to entry in the championship. This ultimately led Porsche’s Vice President, [name], to officially announce the discontinuation of the project and cease any further attempts.
Although Porsche has been absent from F1 for many decades, their name is highly respected in the world of motorsports for their dominance and excellence. The current vice-head of motorsports emphasized this reputation while acknowledging Porsche’s involvement in other forms of motorsport.
The 53-year-old expressed satisfaction with Porsche’s extensive presence in the motorsport scene.The Vice President of Porsche Motorsport further elaborated. Laudenbach explained that Porsche has multiple customer teams participating in the GT3 and GT4 categories. Additionally, they have achieved success in endurance racing with [partner] in both WEC and IMSA, and have been actively involved in the electric revolution through Formula E.
Despite being content with their current motorsport endeavors, Porsche had been considering an entry into F1 even before 2021. The team had developed a demonstration engine and were prepared to embark on their journey if the VW group showed support. However, the disappointment of not joining F1 will linger, as Porsche has experienced yet another missed opportunity.
