Former Formula 1 World Champion Nico Rosberg has thrown a bombshell at Mercedes, suggesting that talks with Max Verstappen might be on the horizon, dealing a potential blow to George Russell’s future with the team.

Rosberg expressed his confusion over Mercedes’ delay in extending Russell’s contract, hinting at the possibility of negotiations with Red Bull’s star driver, Max Verstappen. The speculations come after Mercedes signed Kimi Antonelli on a one-year deal, leaving both Russell and Antonelli’s future uncertain beyond the current season.

Despite Russell’s impressive performance in the 2025 F1 season, including a victory at the Canadian Grand Prix, rumors continue to swirl around Mercedes’ interest in Verstappen. The young British driver has also been linked to other teams like Aston Martin, adding fuel to the already intense speculation surrounding his future in Formula 1.

Rosberg’s comments have sparked further debate among F1 enthusiasts, with the former champion questioning whether there are ongoing discussions between Mercedes and Verstappen’s camp. He highlighted the strategic moves being made by both teams, suggesting a potential game of poker in the negotiations.

On the other hand, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has reiterated his desire to retain Russell long-term, emphasizing the positive atmosphere within the team. Wolff emphasized that Russell’s recent victory would not be the sole determinant in contract negotiations, emphasizing the need to find the right timing to finalize the details.

As the F1 season progresses, the uncertainty surrounding Russell’s future at Mercedes continues to captivate fans and experts alike. With talks of potential conversations with Verstappen’s team emerging, the upcoming months could prove pivotal in shaping the driver lineup for the seasons to come.
