As Formula 1 shifts gears toward the 2025 season, George Russell is radiating confidence about Mercedes’ prospects of reclaiming championship glory. After a tumultuous 2024 that saw the team secure race victories but endure their worst Constructors’ Championship finish since 2012, Russell believes the foundation is set for a title push—provided the new W15 delivers the performance they need.

2024: A Season of Mixed Fortunes

Mercedes’ 2024 campaign was a rollercoaster, characterized by moments of brilliance amidst ongoing struggles with the current regulations. Russell himself enjoyed standout victories in Austria and Las Vegas, while his impressive 19-5 qualifying record against seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton highlighted his individual growth.

Reflecting on the season, Russell found reasons for optimism:
“Whenever the car has had a chance of being on pole, we’ve been on pole. Whenever we’ve had a chance of fighting for the victory… we’ve clinched it.”

Despite finishing fourth in the Constructors’ standings, Russell emphasized Mercedes’ operational sharpness. He believes that if the W15 proves competitive, the team’s ability to capitalize on opportunities will make them genuine contenders:
“If we build a car that is capable of fighting for a championship, we’ll be there to achieve it.”

Russell Takes the Helm

With Lewis Hamilton departing Mercedes after 12 years, Russell enters the 2025 season as the team’s senior driver. Joining him is rookie sensation Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who will make his debut alongside Russell. The leadership shift places significant pressure on Russell to guide Mercedes back to the top while mentoring the promising young Italian.

Russell’s confidence, however, remains unwavering. He believes Mercedes’ racecraft, paired with his personal growth as a driver, has them primed for success:
“As a team, we’ve won almost as many races as McLaren, which is crazy to think,” Russell noted, referencing McLaren’s dominant 2024 campaign.

A Rivalry with Lando Norris?

The 2024 season saw Max Verstappen secure his fifth Drivers’ Championship despite Red Bull’s mid-season slump. McLaren, spearheaded by Lando Norris, clinched the Constructors’ title, but Norris’ errors left Verstappen with a clear path to glory.

Russell didn’t shy away from critiquing Norris’ performance, claiming he would have seized the title if given the McLaren:
“Yes, absolutely. The difference is that when Max has had the chance, he has won, whereas his rivals who should have beaten him this year did not.”

Russell pointed out McLaren’s missed opportunities:
“They’ve thrown away a lot of points, and therefore Max, who is an exceptional driver, has won the championship early.”

The Briton’s comments add fuel to a budding rivalry between himself and Norris, setting the stage for an intense battle in 2025.

The Road Ahead for Mercedes

With Red Bull recalibrating, McLaren surging, and Verstappen still at the peak of his powers, Mercedes faces a daunting challenge in 2025. However, Russell remains optimistic about the team’s trajectory, crediting their meticulous approach and resilience:
“The few opportunities we’ve had this year, we’ve clinched it. That gives me confidence moving forward.”

Can Mercedes Deliver?

The key to Mercedes’ resurgence lies in the W15. After several years of struggling with the current regulations, the team is banking on a more competitive and predictable car to close the gap to McLaren and Red Bull. With Russell’s leadership and Antonelli’s potential, 2025 could mark the start of a new chapter for the Silver Arrows.

One thing is certain: Russell is ready to lead the charge.
“If the car is there, we’ll fight for the title. That’s the goal, and I know we’re capable of achieving it.”
