2025 F1 Season Projections: Mercedes’ Impressive Performance in Pre-Season Testing Reveals Possible Pecking Order

As the 2025 Formula 1 season gets underway, George Russell is unfazed by Mercedes’ expressed interest in Max Verstappen. Russell, who has stepped into the role of team leader at Mercedes following Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, confidently asserts that the prospect of Verstappen joining Mercedes doesn’t heap any additional pressure on him.

Russell, the emerging British racing talent, will be working alongside young prodigy Andrea Kimi Antonelli this season. This pairing is lauded by Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, who has expressed his wish for this duo to represent the team in the future. That being said, Wolff’s longstanding attraction to Verstappen could disrupt these plans. The Mercedes boss had held talks with Verstappen’s team in 2024, fueling speculation about a potential move.

However, such a move would necessitate a tough call from Mercedes, as they would have to determine which current driver would need to make way for Verstappen. Yet, Russell seems unworried about this possibility and is focused on maintaining his performance level. He told the BBC, “All I need to do is continue doing what I’m doing, continue doing what I’ve done my whole career. You perform and everything will be there for you.” He added that he is not even thinking about the possibility of losing his Mercedes drive, backing his skills 100%.

Russell’s rivalry with Verstappen is well-documented. The duo had a contentious encounter during the previous season over a blocking incident in Qatar which cost Verstappen his pole position. This incident led to a heated exchange between the two, with Russell accusing Verstappen of threatening to intentionally crash into him.

Russell has made it clear that he won’t be “bullied” by Verstappen. He stated, “I wasn’t going to just stand and be bullied around. People seem to always back down to him. And that’s just not how I go about my business.” The driver further emphasized that his primary goal is winning, not being friends with the World Champion.

Despite their rivalry, Russell doesn’t seem to expect the discord to spill onto the track, given McLaren’s impressive pace in pre-season testing. He noted, “McLaren, without doubt, look by far the strongest. Especially their race pace looks pretty impressive.”

So, as the 2025 season takes off, Russell remains nonchalant about the potential arrival of Verstappen at Mercedes and is undeterred by the drama surrounding their relationship. His gaze is firmly fixed on the track as he prepares to compete against the best in the world.
