George Russell recently addressed the rumors surrounding the possibility of Max Verstappen moving to Mercedes in the future. The news of Verstappen’s transfer to Ferrari in 2025 caused a stir in the Formula 1 community, leading to speculations about who could replace the seven-time world champion. An unexpected name that emerged was Max Verstappen.
Currently under contract with Red Bull until 2028, Verstappen’s future with the team has become uncertain amid controversy. After Christian Horner, team principal of Red Bull, was cleared of charges following the leak of anonymous evidence, Jos Verstappen, Max’s father, expressed his dissatisfaction with the situation and hinted at the possibility of considering other teams for his son. As speculations about Verstappen’s potential move gained traction, George Russell was asked about his thoughts on the matter.
Russell believes that the decision ultimately lies with Max Verstappen and his current team, Red Bull, in terms of how they handle the controversy. However, if Verstappen decides to leave, Mercedes would be the most likely destination, considering Ferrari’s commitments to their current drivers until 2025. During the Bahrain Grand Prix weekend, Jos Verstappen and Toto Wolff, CEO of the Silver Arrows team, had a meeting, with Wolff even hinting at the possibility of welcoming the Dutch driver to Mercedes.
In a separate incident, George Russell called for transparency after a report claimed that the FIA president interfered in overturning a penalty from the previous season. During the 2023 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Russell initially finished fourth but was briefly promoted to third when another driver received a 10-second penalty for a team error in the pits. However, the decision was later reversed and Max Verstappen emerged as the race winner at the Jeddah Street Circuit.
The Mercedes team simply wants transparency and a level playing field. According to Russell, they want the opportunity to showcase their skills under equal conditions. Russell expressed surprise at the overturning of the penalty, as he believes that the Mercedes legal team effectively presented their case and won. Unfortunately, the team ended up losing the case.
According to the BBC, the FIA president intervened to overturn the penalty imposed on Alonso. The FIA compliance officer received two complaints related to possible whistleblower allegations against Ben Sulayem. Russell’s main concern now is to ensure transparency to maintain fairness in the sport.
