George Russell had an unexpected surprise when Fernando Alonso braked abruptly on the last lap of the Australian GP. This resulted in Russell’s accident.

George Russell had a disastrous conclusion to the event. During the weekend at Albert Park, the 26-year-old driver had a poor performance until the last lap, when he was involved in a high-speed collision. This marked another challenging exit for the Silver Arrows. Fortunately, Russell emerged unscathed from the incident. The British driver took full responsibility for the accident.

During the last lap, Russell found himself behind the Aston Martin by approximately half a second. The British driver openly admitted fault for the incident, acknowledging that he went off track. Russell stated that the two-time world champion suddenly closed in on his Mercedes just before the braking zone. The 26-year-old driver emphasized that both drivers were called by the race direction.

According to the Mercedes driver, Alonso braked 100 meters before the corner. The 26-year-old driver confirmed that this was evident in the data analyzed by the Silver Arrows. George Russell expressed his lack of readiness for Alonso’s early braking, which caught him off guard and led to the serious accident. Furthermore, Russell expressed curiosity about the stewards’ perspective on the matter.

Fernando Alonso faced numerous challenges during the weekend at Albert Park. The two-time world champion damaged the floor of the AMR24 during free practice. Additionally, Alonso struggled during qualifying and secured the tenth position on the grid, behind his teammate. However, the Spanish driver showed an admirable recovery in the race, finishing in sixth place, although he may have played a role in Russell’s accident.

Alonso stated that his focus was primarily on the cars in front of him, not the ones behind him. The 42-year-old driver cited issues with the AMR24 battery, which made it harder to pay attention to George Russell. The two-time world champion expressed relief knowing that Russell escaped the accident unharmed, despite significant damage to the car.

Although there is a possibility of the stewards taking action against Fernando Alonso for braking early, race control has not provided any updates on the incident yet. The paddock breathed a sigh of relief when George Russell emerged from the vehicle unscathed.
