As the 2025 Formula 1 season rapidly approaches, Mercedes star George Russell has reignited his ongoing feud with reigning world champion Max Verstappen, accusing the Dutchman of “bullying” other drivers and creating a toxic atmosphere in the paddock. The feud, which began during the 2024 championship campaign, spilled over beyond the track and continues to simmer as the new season draws near.
Russell, who inherited the number one spot at Mercedes after Lewis Hamilton’s unexpected move to Ferrari, is entering his seventh season in F1. However, despite his growing role within the team, the British racer remains frustrated by Verstappen’s aggressive on-track behavior and lack of accountability.
Russell Calls Out Verstappen’s ‘Bully’ Tactics
In an interview with Autosport ahead of the 2025 season opener in Australia, Russell discussed his ongoing dissatisfaction with Verstappen’s driving tactics and the lack of consequences for his aggressive behavior. “I am entering my seventh year of F1 now and you do start to recognise where you are,” said Russell. “You realise your own voice and the platform you have and the impact you can make.”
Russell made it clear that he would no longer tolerate being disrespected by Verstappen, who he claims has used bullying tactics to get ahead on the track. He reflected on how Verstappen’s aggressive moves have gone unchecked for too long, stating, “How Max was driving with regard to being harder and sort of bullying others around, showing his aggression in a manner that nobody stood up to.”
Russell, who was visibly frustrated by Verstappen’s dominance in 2024, went on to explain his reasoning for speaking out against the Red Bull driver. “I was frustrated watching the sport last year, when there should have been such a great title battle, and it was not, so those comments in Qatar tipped me over the edge,” Russell admitted. “I just thought of everything that had happened, from the on-track driving antics to where he was talking off track. It wasn’t acceptable and something needed to be done.”
A History of Tension with Verstappen
Russell’s frustrations echo those of his predecessor, Lewis Hamilton, who was one of the few drivers to challenge Verstappen’s aggressive style head-on, particularly during their historic 2021 title battle. However, as Verstappen’s dominance has grown, it has become increasingly clear that no one else is willing to challenge him in the same way.
Russell’s outspokenness comes at a time when he is expected to lead Mercedes to the front of the grid, especially with the arrival of talented rookie Kimi Antonelli as his teammate. The Mercedes team will be hoping for a clean and competitive season, but the tension between Russell and Verstappen could easily spill over, making for a dramatic storyline throughout the year.
As the 2025 season progresses, the question remains whether Russell will continue to clash with Verstappen both on and off the track, and whether the two drivers can keep their rivalry from affecting their respective teams’ performances.
