As the 2024 Formula 1 season concluded at the Yas Marina Circuit, George Russell reflected on his three-year partnership with seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, describing the departing Mercedes teammate as a “role model” both on and off the track.

Hamilton’s Impact Beyond Racing

Russell, who matched Hamilton stride-for-stride during their time at Mercedes, emphasized that his most significant takeaway wasn’t about driving skills but the way Hamilton carries himself:

“To be honest, I think just seeing first-hand what a role model he is,” Russell remarked. “It’s about recognizing the platform we have as drivers and how important it is to use it responsibly.”

Russell spoke of Hamilton’s influence not just in motorsport but on younger generations through platforms like TikTok, Netflix, and YouTube. Reflecting on their shared journey, Russell recalled a poignant moment from 2009 when, as an 11-year-old, he met Hamilton at a karting event:

“When I look back at that photo of Lewis and me when I was a kid, it reminds me of how many young kids look up to us today. How you handle victories and defeats matters because you inspire millions.”

A New Chapter for Mercedes

With Hamilton moving to Ferrari in 2025, Mercedes is entering a new era. Russell, now the senior figure at the team, will mentor 18-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who joins the grid after being touted as one of F1’s brightest young talents.

Russell expressed his excitement about working with Antonelli:

“Kimi’s exceptionally fast, and I’ve got no doubt he’s going to keep me on my toes next year. Three years with Lewis has been incredible, but I’m looking forward to this new challenge.”

Passing the Baton

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix wasn’t just a farewell for Hamilton but a symbolic passing of the torch at Mercedes. Before the race, Russell and Hamilton shared a heartfelt embrace on the grid—a moment Russell described as meaningful:

“Lewis has been an inspiration for me, not just as a teammate but as a person. His efforts with initiatives like Mission 44 to promote diversity and inclusion show his commitment beyond racing.”

Russell’s Outlook for 2025

Now tasked with leading Mercedes, Russell is ready to embrace his role as the team’s anchor. The Briton, who finished just two points behind Hamilton over their three years together, is poised to guide Mercedes through a new chapter while fending off challenges from Antonelli and the rest of the grid.

“It’s a privilege to be stepping into this role at Mercedes. With Kimi coming in, it’s a fresh start for the team, and I’m looking forward to what we can achieve together.”

As Hamilton embarks on his Ferrari journey, Russell’s reflections highlight the enduring legacy Hamilton leaves behind—not just in records and championships but as a leader and role model in the sport.
