George Russell Reflects on His Mercedes Journey: ‘I Matched Hamilton’s Level’

With Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari marking the end of an era at Mercedes, George Russell has emerged as the leader of the Silver Arrows. Reflecting on his three seasons alongside the seven-time world champion, Russell expressed confidence that he has proven himself capable of competing at Hamilton’s level—a benchmark many consider the pinnacle of Formula 1.

Russell vs. Hamilton: A Statistical Showdown

Across their three seasons together, Russell outshone Hamilton in certain key areas, securing three victories to Hamilton’s two and outscoring him in 2022 and 2024. Last season, Russell dominated in qualifying, delivering an 18-5 head-to-head record against his veteran teammate.

However, Mercedes’ struggles with the ground effect regulations introduced in 2022 limited their ability to consistently challenge for wins, diminishing the overall success of the Hamilton-Russell pairing.

Gaining Confidence from a Legend

Russell credits his time alongside Hamilton as a formative experience. Competing with and often matching the sport’s most decorated driver bolstered his belief in his abilities as he prepares to lead Mercedes into a new chapter.

“I’ll always remember my first F1 race for Mercedes in Abu Dhabi 2016,” Russell told The Times. “I was starstruck being in the same room as him during the debrief. So for sure it is surreal that we’ve now been team-mates for three years, and that I know within myself that I can perform at a minimum of his level.”

A Natural Qualifier

Russell’s qualifying prowess has been a hallmark of his career, and it shone brightly during his time with Hamilton. He attributed his edge in one-lap pace to his driving style, which seems to gel well with the current generation of 18-inch Pirelli tires and the nuances of ground effect cars.

“My natural driving style has worked well in these cars,” Russell said. “But, equally, my qualifying record against my team-mates in the previous generation was good. In every category, my qualifying records have been strong.”

While Russell acknowledged that Hamilton is his “toughest rival,” he noted that his performances in qualifying were less about the car and more about his inherent skill.

Leading Mercedes into a New Era

As Russell steps into the role of team leader, Mercedes is rebuilding its ambitions after struggling to adapt to the post-2022 regulation era. While the W15 proved challenging to tame, Russell’s ability to extract strong performances underlined his credentials as a driver capable of leading the team.

With Hamilton now in Ferrari red, Russell will partner with rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli for the 2025 season. As Mercedes works to regain its championship-winning form, Russell’s confidence and leadership will be crucial.

The Road Ahead

George Russell’s journey at Mercedes has solidified his position as one of Formula 1’s top talents. Competing against Hamilton was both a challenge and an opportunity, and Russell has emerged stronger and more determined to drive Mercedes back to the front of the grid. The 2025 season will be a litmus test for Russell’s ability to lead the team into a new era of success.
