George Russell has opened up about the seismic shift at Mercedes as the team enters its first season without Lewis Hamilton since 2012. Hamilton, who moves to Ferrari in 2025, leaves behind a legacy of dominance and resilience, and Russell believes the transition marks both a moment of reflection and a rejuvenating reset for the team.
“A Reminder of Glory and a Fresh Start”
Russell reflected on Hamilton’s departure during the team’s recent farewell celebration, noting the juxtaposition of the team’s tough recent seasons with memories of its extraordinary success.
“We had a do on Thursday night altogether, looking back on some of his memories,” Russell shared. “As painful as these three years have been, seeing all of these memories reminds the team that we can do it. We have the same team that was there during Lewis’s glory years.”
Hamilton, Russell revealed, used the occasion to inspire the team, reminding them of their accomplishments even amidst the struggles of recent seasons.
“Lewis said, ‘Look, let’s stand tall and not forget all these pole positions and wins we’ve had together.’ It’s been a nice way to finish the season.”
Hamilton’s Departure: A Catalyst for Change
Russell believes that Hamilton’s move to Ferrari, while a significant loss, offers an opportunity to reignite motivation within the team.
“This change for everyone is really going to spark a lot of motivation,” Russell said. “Sometimes change is much needed.”
After three challenging years since the introduction of ground-effect regulations, Russell sees the transition as a turning point that could reinvigorate Mercedes in its quest to return to the top of Formula 1.
Lessons Learned from a Legend
Reflecting on his time as Hamilton’s teammate, Russell said the lessons he gained went far beyond the racetrack.
“To be honest, just seeing firsthand what a role model he is. I recognize from Lewis that we’ve all got this platform, and we have to use it correctly.”
Russell acknowledged Hamilton’s influence in shaping his understanding of the responsibility that comes with being a public figure in Formula 1.
“When I look back to that photo I had of Lewis and I when I was a kid, I looked up to him, the same way all these kids look up to us. The way you deal with victories, the way you deal with losses—it’s important.”
Mercedes’ New Era Awaits
As Mercedes prepares to enter its post-Hamilton chapter, Russell is determined to carry forward the lessons learned from his iconic teammate. With the team aiming to return to title contention, the 2025 season represents both a challenge and an opportunity to build a new legacy.
“We’ve been through tough times, but this team knows how to win,” Russell affirmed. “Now it’s about channeling that knowledge and using this change as a springboard into the future.”
