Mercedes enters the 2024 British GP with a sense of accomplishment following their victory in Austria on June 30th.
George Russell, the most recent winner in a thrilling Formula 1 season, enters the 2024 British GP with hopes of emerging victorious at Silverstone. Russell’s chances were boosted when Max Verstappen and Lando Norris collided in Austria, eliminating themselves from contention. This presented Russell with his second F1 win and provided a much-needed boost for the Mercedes team, who did not hear the German national anthem throughout the entire 2023 season. Can Russell and Toto Wolff’s team continue their success and win the 2024 British Grand Prix?
Russell expressed his thoughts on the upcoming race, stating that he expects a competitive battle. He believes that Lando and Max will likely lead the pack, as they have shown great speed in high-speed corners in recent races. With Silverstone’s abundance of high-speed sections, these two drivers are considered the favorites. However, Russell remains confident in his own abilities and believes he won’t be far behind.
Mercedes has a strong track record at the British GP, which is not surprising considering the race takes place near their facilities. The Silverstone circuit is located just a short drive from their Brackley factory, where aerodynamics are perfected, and 20 miles away from Brixworth, where their exceptional engines are developed. Lewis Hamilton, under Mercedes power, has won this race seven times between 2008 and 2021. He also achieved podium finishes in 2022 and 2023, showcasing the enduring competitiveness of the Silver Arrows at this track.
In contrast, Russell’s best result at the British GP was a fifth-place finish in 2023. Unfortunately, a poorly timed safety car allowed his experienced teammate to overtake him during a pit-stop phase, ultimately claiming third place. The British GP is highly regarded in motorsport, alongside races like the Monaco GP and Italian GP. Many legendary drivers have triumphed at the Silverstone circuit over the years.
Having already won the 2022 Brazilian GP and the 2024 Austrian GP, Russell has experienced the joy of standing on the top step of the podium and hearing his national anthem. However, winning his home event would hold a special significance. Russell considers himself fortunate to have Silverstone as his home race, as he believes it is an extraordinary event for fans. The support from the passionate F1 enthusiasts in attendance makes it an unforgettable experience. Russell acknowledges that he and his fellow drivers were once young fans attending F1 races, making the opportunity to win at Silverstone all the more special.
