The FIA Comes Down Hard on Mercedes’ George Russell with Double Punishment at Canadian Grand Prix

In a shocking turn of events at the Canadian Grand Prix, Mercedes’ F1 driver George Russell faced not one, but two penalties in a single session, confirmed by the FIA. The penalties were handed out by a revised stewarding panel after Derek Warwick was ousted for unauthorized comments to the media. Enrique Bernoldi stepped in to take over the stewarding duties remotely from Geneva.

Russell’s infractions were crystal clear, as he was caught exceeding the pitlane speed limit at the beginning and end of the session by 0.1km/h and 0.2km/h, respectively. While minor speeding violations like Russell’s typically result in a mere €100 fine during practice sessions, the stakes are much higher during races, often leading to a five-second penalty in addition to fines.

The FIA has been cracking down on speeding violations, with instances like Sergio Perez’s drastic 120.6km/h clocked at the British Grand Prix in 2021 resulting in a hefty fine. Surprisingly, no sporting penalties were imposed on Perez for the incident, highlighting the varying degrees of punishment in F1.

Speeding fines, a recurring issue at the Canadian Grand Prix, are usually attributed to the team rather than the individual driver, placing added pressure on Mercedes to ensure compliance with regulations. The intense scrutiny on speeding violations underscores the FIA’s commitment to upholding safety standards in the high-stakes world of Formula 1 racing.

Stay tuned for more updates on the repercussions of George Russell’s double penalization and the evolving landscape of F1 regulations.
