George Russell pede sistema de carro de segurança automatizado após ficar preso na pista no Grande Prêmio da Austrália.

George Russell suffered a horrific accident during the 2024 Australian Grand Prix. The incident occurred at the Albert Park circuit, where Russell’s car collided with the wall, causing him to ricochet and become stuck on the track for a significant period of time.

Reflecting on the events of the Australian GP, the Mercedes driver expressed his belief that a more effective safety system should be implemented after such incidents. Despite Russell repeatedly requesting a red flag over the radio, no safety car was deployed. Instead, a virtual safety car was activated several seconds later, but by then, Russell’s car and some others had already passed the stranded vehicle.

The surprising aspect was that the race continued with only a virtual safety car, without any other safety measures being taken. Russell expressed his dissatisfaction with the handling of the situation.

The 25-year-old driver emphasized the need for decision-makers in the world of motorsport to develop a solid solution for track incidents. Given the rapid evolution of the sport, Russell believes that quick and competent actions must be taken to effectively deal with such incidents.

During the final lap of the Australian GP, Fernando Alonso chose to brake at turn six, resulting in a collision with George Russell. However, Alonso was disappointed to receive a 20-second penalty for his actions.

The Spanish driver believes that any race driver would have made the same decision in that situation. He also stated that if the incident had occurred on a different track, Russell might not have crashed. Alonso acknowledged that turn six at the Albert Park circuit is a dangerous blind spot. However, he expressed surprise at being penalized for the incident, considering it to be the harshest penalty of the 2024 Formula 1 season. As a result of the penalty, Alonso finished the Australian GP in eighth place.
