George Russell breakes records at Bahrain pre-season test as Cadillac struggles ignite drama

George Russell Ignites F1 2026 Pre-Season Test with Blistering Pace as Cadillac Stumbles

In a high-octane morning session at the Bahrain pre-season test, George Russell put on a breathtaking display of speed, clocking in the fastest lap of the week with an astonishing time of 1m33.918s. This remarkable feat came less than half an hour into Friday’s session, leaving fans and competitors alike in awe as he outpaced teammate Lewis Hamilton, who trailed with a respectable 1m34.209s.

With an aggressive push on soft tyres, Russell's performance not only set a new benchmark but also signaled his intent ahead of the 2026 Formula 1 season. The competition was fierce, but the Mercedes star clearly had the edge, as no other driver managed to break the 1m35s barrier. Red Bull's Max Verstappen secured the third position with a time of 1m35.341s, while Haas’ Oliver Bearman and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri rounded out the top five with times of 1m35.972s and 1m36.390s, respectively.

In a surprising twist, the morning session also highlighted the struggles faced by the newly emerging Cadillac Racing team. After causing a red flag on Thursday when Sergio Perez faced a stoppage on track, Valtteri Bottas was unable to shake off the bad luck, managing only eight laps before encountering mechanical issues. It took nearly two hours to rectify the problem, allowing Bottas to complete 37 laps, but he ultimately found himself at the bottom of the time sheets, well behind the pace.

The session also saw notable performances from Alpine's Franco Colapinto and Williams' Carlos Sainz, who finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson was just a fraction behind Sainz, clocking in with an impressive 84 laps on medium tyres, more than any other driver during the morning session. Meanwhile, Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto, who predominantly ran on hard compounds, ended the morning ahead of Aston Martin's Lance Stroll by a staggering 4.5 seconds—an ironic reflection of the performance shortfall that Stroll himself had recently highlighted regarding the AMR26.

As the teams prepare for the intense competition ahead, Russell's blistering pace and Cadillac's technical woes have set the stage for what promises to be a thrilling season. Fans eagerly await the next round of action as the teams refine their strategies and iron out the kinks. Will Russell maintain his momentum, or will other teams rise to the challenge? The countdown to the 2026 F1 season has officially begun, and the excitement is palpable!
