Geely and Nio, two Chinese automotive companies, have announced a partnership to collaborate on the development of technology for the exchange of batteries for 100% electric vehicles.
The goal of both brands is to create batteries that can be used in their models and can be exchanged at stations and battery exchange stations compatible with both brands’ vehicles.
Nio has over 1,300 battery exchange stations in China, and in Europe, it already has 13 stations located in Norway, the Netherlands, and Germany.
On the other hand, Geely, which includes brands such as Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, as well as a 50% stake in Smart, has around 300 battery exchange stations in China. Additionally, it is also the second company to sign an agreement with Nio, following Changan Automobile.
It is worth noting that battery exchange is seen as an option to relieve pressure on the electric grids during peak charging times, but experts argue that this will only be possible when electric vehicles start using standardized batteries.
