Pierre Gasly Shines at Imola, Alpine Chases McLaren in Thrilling Friday Practice

In a heart-pounding Friday at Imola, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly emerged as a force to be reckoned with, securing an impressive P3 behind the formidable McLarens. Gasly, who has already shown his brilliance this season in Bahrain, seems poised to claim another stellar performance on a track where he secured a second-row Qualifying position in 2020. The Alpine driver concluded Friday’s free practice session in third place, with Franco Colapinto not far behind, finishing in thirteenth place.

Gasly expressed his satisfaction with the day, stating, “It’s been a good Friday for us from the start of the day. I immediately felt that the car was behaving well, and we resolved some issues we had in Miami. The car is responding the way I want, and now I’m just trying to find the limits and refine some things, but the potential is definitely there.”

However, the session was not without its challenges as Gasly encountered an unexpected obstacle towards the end of Free Practice 1. He recounted, “A hare crossed the track before Turn 14 and unfortunately hit my front wing. It was one of those things for which I could do nothing, and the impact caused some damage to the car. The team did a great job repairing things and minimizing disruptions ahead of Free Practice 2. We are all very close, and the goal is to crack the top-10.”

Meanwhile, Franco Colapinto acknowledged that there is still much work to be done on the car’s setup but expressed growing confidence. “I still have a lot to learn and get used to, but I’m adapting, and by the end of the day, I started to be a bit more competitive. The car seems quite competitive, especially with Pierre, so I’m sure we can compete. Qualifying will be tough due to traffic; we will have to be ready from the start of Q1, but I can’t wait.”

As Gasly continues to dazzle and Alpine pushes to challenge the dominant McLaren team, all eyes are on the thrilling action set to unfold at Imola.
