The Alpine driver will wear a helmet in tribute to the late Ayrton Senna, the iconic yellow design with green and blue stripes serving as a clear homage to the Brazilian three-time Formula 1 world champion. This replica resembles the helmet that made its final appearance in the cockpit of the unfortunate Williams car.
That particular vehicle was powered by Renault, just like the Lotus JPS 97T with a turbo V6 engine that Senna drove to claim his memorable first victory at the rain-soaked Estoril circuit. Gasly, on the other hand, drives an Alpine featuring a current-era Renault V6 turbo engine.
Ahead of the 31st edition of the Grand Prix at Imola, Gasly expressed, “This weekend holds great significance for numerous reasons, especially as we commemorate the 30th anniversary of the tragic passing of the legend Ayrton Senna. I will pay tribute to one of my sporting idols, who inspired me to pursue racing, by wearing a special Senna helmet during the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix.”
The 28-year-old Frenchman added, “After the race, the helmet will be auctioned off to raise funds for the Ayrton Senna Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting children’s education in Brazil.”
Gasly also shared his excitement about the opportunity to drive Senna’s 1984 Toleman, the Formula 1 debut car, during a recent outing at Silverstone. Reflecting on the experience, he remarked, “It was an incredibly special day that will stay with me for the rest of my life.”
Gasly predicted that the Grand Prix weekend at Imola would be filled with intense emotions as they pay tribute to Senna on the track. This sentiment is in line with his previous displays of heartfelt gestures, such as his annual visits to the Anthoine Hubert accident site in Spa-Francorchamps and his helmet tribute to Francois Cevert a few years ago.
The Alpine team’s teammate, Esteban Ocon, also recognized the importance of this year’s Grand Prix at Imola, stating: “This year marks the 30th anniversary of Ayrton Senna’s passing, and I know that all teams and drivers will pay their respects this weekend.”
He continued: “Ayrton is a legendary figure and an icon of our sport. He redefined the standards of speed and commitment. Watching some of his pole laps, it is evident that he constantly pushed himself to the limit, skillfully maneuvering the car through each corner. Truly amazing!”
Ocon also mentioned the return to Imola after last year’s devastating floods, which caused significant damage and displaced several people in the Emilia Romagna region. He expressed hope for a week of reflection and excitement at the prospect of seeing fans again. Additionally, he expressed his desire to put on a remarkable show for them.
In the harsh reality, the French team is currently facing a disastrous 2024 Formula 1 season, with little hope in sight. Ocon managed to secure a single point, while Gasly has yet to score any.
Alpine currently sits in 8th place in the 2024 Formula 1 Constructors’ standings, a significant drop from last year when they had accumulated 35 points by the 7th round and were comfortably in 5th place. Their fall to the back of the grid has been alarming.
Despite the lack of upcoming upgrades, Bruno Famin tried to find a positive note before the Emilia Romagna GP weekend. He stated: “The fact that we secured our first point of the season in Miami shows that we are indeed making progress after a particularly challenging start to our campaign.”
“In the last two races, we have shown a slight improvement in competitiveness, allowing us to race in more promising positions on the track. Although part of this may be attributed to specific track conditions, we have managed to unlock additional performance thanks to our upgrades.”
Famin added: “Although we are not introducing any significant upgrades in the upcoming races, we are continuing to work tirelessly in our factories to enhance the car and extract even more performance.”
This news may not be well received by their drivers. However, Gasly’s tribute to Senna through the design of his helmet may bring some luck to the struggling Alpine team. Undoubtedly, they need it.
