Pierre Gasly, member of the Alpine Formula 1 team, asked his teammate Esteban Ocon to modify his behavior in races after their collision on the first lap of the Monaco Grand Prix. Despite a challenging start to the season, Gasly managed to advance to Q3 while Ocon struggled to secure a strong position. Both drivers were hoping to capitalize on their starting positions in the race, and their chances improved when Carlos Sainz had a puncture, allowing them to move up in the standings. However, Ocon attempted to overtake the car in front of him and collided with Gasly, causing Ocon’s car to go airborne and resulting in his retirement from the race. Gasly, on the other hand, was fortunate that the race was temporarily stopped due to a red flag, allowing him to change his punctured tire and finish in 10th place. Despite his own success, Gasly expressed his disappointment with his teammate’s actions, emphasizing that the team cannot afford such incidents given their current struggles. He stressed the importance of communication and ensuring that similar incidents are avoided in the future.
Although Sainz’s Ferrari was reinstated in third place after the restart, Gasly argues that Ocon’s absence in the race prevented the team from achieving a better result.
“At that moment, we were in ninth and tenth places, so there was no reason to take risks and try to take out both cars,” he added.
“It’s impossible to rewrite history, so we’ll never know if things could have been different. But we were in a strong position as a team, especially with two cars ahead of us. I really believe I had the pace to try something different and we could have been smart about it. We had a different strategy planned.
“Unfortunately, we couldn’t execute like that, but we will never know.
“In the end, I think we did our best because after the incident, I had a flat tire on my hard tire and had to restart with the medium tire.”
The Alpine team boss, Bruno Famin, blamed Ocon when speaking to French television, and Ocon himself admitted fault in his interviews.
When asked if it was easier to move on because there would be no lingering disagreement about who caused the accident, Gasly replied: “In that aspect, yes.
“On the other hand, we still see a damaged car that didn’t finish and could have scored points.
“We came very close to having both cars in the wall. Fortunately, we escaped that and I am happy we crossed the finish line and managed to secure that point.
“We don’t want to see that, and at the end of the day, we have 1,200 people working tirelessly behind us. Everyone is giving their all to provide us with the best possible car, and everyone is watching the race on Sunday. They shouldn’t witness a situation like this. We will discuss this and improve.”
Gasly refused to comment on whether the expired contracts of both drivers influenced Ocon’s aggressive behavior, but he urged his teammate to be more restrained in his approach.
“I don’t want to answer that,” he replied. “He is a professional driver. You know what to do and what not to do, especially with your teammates.
“He is a talented driver, a very talented driver. He knows what he’s doing, so he just needs to make a change.”
