Pierre Gasly Defends Verstappen: ‘Smart Aggression’ Behind F1 Champ’s Controversial Tactics

Max Verstappen’s uncompromising driving style has been a hot topic throughout the 2024 Formula 1 season, with his wheel-to-wheel battles, particularly with title rival Lando Norris, sparking fierce debate. However, Alpine’s Pierre Gasly has come to Verstappen’s defense, arguing that the reigning champion’s aggressive tactics are not only calculated but a key component of his dominance.

With Verstappen on the verge of clinching his fourth consecutive world title, Gasly believes there’s method behind the madness, describing the Dutchman’s racing style as both “smart” and uniquely suited to the championship stakes.

“We All Knew This From Karting”: Gasly Reflects on Verstappen’s Roots

Having raced against Verstappen since their karting days, Gasly says the Red Bull driver’s approach has always been bold, even verging on ruthless.

“I think we can all tell, all of us who raced him in karting, [that it] was the same,” Gasly remarked. Many starts I ended up in the grass because Max started behind me, and it was just the way he used to race back then.

But for Gasly, this isn’t recklessness—it’s a calculated use of the rules. “He’s also quite smart at using the regulations and takes everything up to the limit,” Gasly added. “When you’re fighting for a world championship, that’s what you expect a guy like him to do.”

A Divisive Style: Pushing Limits or Crossing the Line?

Verstappen’s aggressive racing has reignited debates within the F1 paddock, particularly after contentious clashes with Norris during the United States and Mexico City Grands Prix. Critics argue that Verstappen’s tactics often blur the line between hard racing and rule-breaking, while supporters see them as the hallmark of a champion willing to exploit every advantage.

Gasly is among those who acknowledge the controversy but insists Verstappen’s approach has historical precedent. “It’s a trait that’s been employed by previous F1 greats such as Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher,” he noted.

Still, Gasly admitted that Verstappen’s style is “unique” in today’s grid. “When you go wheel-to-wheel with him, the outcome is often different than with other drivers,” Gasly said. “Whether it’s fair or not, that’s another conversation, but it’s guaranteed hard racing.”

The FIA Steps In: Rule Revisions on the Horizon

The ongoing debate over Verstappen’s tactics has prompted discussions among the FIA, drivers, and teams about refining the racing guidelines. After a fiery meeting in Mexico, the 20 drivers agreed that the rules need clearer phrasing, with updates expected at the end of the season.

While Verstappen has mastered navigating the current guidelines, the rephrased rules could challenge his ability to continue pushing boundaries in the same way. But for Gasly, the Dutchman’s capacity to adapt is not in question.

A Championship Defined by Smart Aggression

Verstappen’s aggressive style is undeniably polarizing, but it’s also a cornerstone of his dominance. As Gasly pointed out, it’s a tactical edge that has propelled the Red Bull star to the brink of yet another title.

“He takes everything up to the limit,” Gasly said. “And when you’re fighting for a world championship, that’s exactly what you expect.”

As the season draws to a close, Verstappen’s driving philosophy remains a focal point—not just for his rivals but for the evolution of Formula 1 itself.
