GARY ANDERSON REVEALS SAUBER’S PLANS TO WIN AUDI

SAUBER REBRANDS AS STAKE AND SETS SIGHTS ON AUDI FACTORY EFFORT

Sauber, now known as Stake, is gearing up to become Audi’s Formula 1 factory team starting in 2026. The team’s progress with its new C44 car is crucial in laying the foundation for this exciting venture. While the team has shown glimpses of hope in the past, its most successful seasons were as the BMW works team from 2006-2009.

Despite a challenging few seasons, Stake aims to turn things around with Audi’s full involvement. However, they still have a couple of years to prove their capabilities before officially becoming an Audi works team. The focus now is on strengthening and making significant strides in 2024. Stake currently uses the same engine as the Ferrari works team and customer Haas. Their ambitious goal is to demonstrate a deep understanding of the required chassis direction with their new car.

Let’s take a closer look at Stake’s launch car, keeping in mind that our analysis is based on the information presented so far. As they say, F1 can often be a game of smoke and mirrors, and Stake seems to agree, especially with their new Stake deal.

One notable feature is the incorporation of the Red Bull-style radiator inlet, which controls airflow at high speeds. This design ensures that the airflow over the upper sidepod surface remains consistent, without compromising the airflow through the sidepod undercut into the coke bottle area.

In terms of suspension, Stake has transitioned from a pushrod to a pullrod operation. This change allows for an increased rising rate effect on the front suspension. By using a pullrod, Stake can run the car on softer springs for slow-speed corners while maintaining stability at high speeds and during braking.

The top and bottom wishbones have been positioned as high as possible, reducing the load in the pullrod. This setup allows the lower wishbone to focus solely on handling braking and cornering forces without being affected by the pushrod load.

Stake’s front upper wishbone geometry and anti-dive characteristics are similar to last year’s car. The use of extreme front anti-dive and rear anti-lift characteristics, similar to Red Bull, helps control the aerodynamic platform. However, it’s important to note that a solid aerodynamic platform is necessary before these tools can be effectively utilized.

The pullrod system not only provides a cleaner layout but also reduces loads and improves working angles. Additionally, Stake’s body bulge, possibly designed to house the cooling system, allows for a more flat surface to accommodate the Stake decal.

In terms of safety, Stake has opted for the more common A-frame structure design for the rollover bar. This lighter solution has a positive impact on the center of gravity height. While it’s challenging to see the internal structure of the intake, it is likely that the complete carbon structure from the top of the chassis upwards works as one to distribute the rollover bar test loads.

It’s important to remember that what we have seen so far is only a glimpse of what Stake has in store. The true test will come when the car hits the track on February 9. Stake’s focus should be on improving in-season development to instill confidence in Audi’s decision to partner with them from 2026.
