Sergio Garcia, from MT Helmets, took control of the Moto2 races in Le Mans, leading from the first lap to the finish line. This victory allowed him to regain the championship lead. Garcia’s teammate, Ai Ogura, made an impressive recovery from 17th on the grid to secure second place, resulting in the team’s first one-two finish. Joe Roberts, from American Racing, finished in fourth place, relinquishing the championship lead to Garcia in the process.
Pole position Canet, from Fantic Racing, defied expectations by walking with crutches due to a left tibia fracture suffered during training in Jerez two weeks earlier. Canet was joined on the front row by Roberts and Garcia. However, it was Garcia who took the lead early on, while Canet and Roberts did not have a good start.
This allowed Garcia to open a small gap between him, Roberts, Manuel Gonzalez, and Alonso Lopez at the end of the first lap. Canet, on the other hand, struggled in eighth place. In the following laps, Canet began his recovery and found himself in fifth place by lap 5, setting the fastest lap time.
At this point, Garcia maintained a lead of just under a second, with Roberts closely following his pace. Canet continued his recovery and reached fourth place on lap 6, closely following Roberts and Lopez. Despite his injury, Canet seemed to be the only rider capable of keeping up with Garcia’s pace, and he secured second place on lap 7 after a battle with Roberts and Lopez.
As the race progressed, Garcia’s lead extended to over a second and a half, making it increasingly difficult for anyone to catch up with him. Canet’s progress seemed to stall as he fell almost two seconds behind Garcia on lap 13. He maintained a comfortable 1.3-second lead over Lopez in third place, while Roberts dropped to fourth.
With most of the riders maintaining a steady formation, Ogura’s pace improved towards the end of the race. He passed Roberts to secure fourth place. Lopez managed to catch up with and overtake Canet to secure second place on lap 20, but Garcia remained untouchable in the lead. However, Canet became a hindrance to the riders behind him, possibly due to his injuries or tire wear.
Lopez was unable to break away from the chasing group, and Ogura climbed to third place on the final lap. In a dramatic turn of events, Canet was pushed off the track by Roberts, allowing Ogura to secure second place. Garcia emerged as the winner, with Ogura securing a one-two finish for the MT Helmets Moto2 team.
Garcia’s victory propelled him to the top of the standings with 89 points, seven points ahead of Roberts in second place. Lopez held onto third place, followed by Roberts and Chantra in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Canet dropped to sixth position, while Fermin Aldeguer finished seventh. Tony Arbolino, Albert Arenas, and Izan Guevara completed the top 10.
Jeremy Alcoba finished 11th, with Filip Salac and Senna Aguis in 12th and 13th, respectively. Darryn Binder and Marcos Ramirez secured the final points in 14th and 15th place.
