Gabriel Bortoleto declares Audi will dominate F1 engines: confidence fuels ambitious future

Audi’s F1 Future: A Powerhouse in the Making, Says Bortoleto

In a bold declaration that promises to shake the foundations of Formula 1, Gabriel Bortoleto, the young star of the Audi F1 Team, has expressed unwavering confidence in Audi's potential to evolve into one of the sport's premier engine manufacturers. After making their much-anticipated debut at the Australian Grand Prix, the German automotive giant is determined to overcome its current power struggles and emerge as a formidable force on the racetrack.

Bortoleto, who skillfully piloted the R26 to a respectable ninth-place finish, acknowledges the challenges that lie ahead. The Albert Park Circuit revealed critical weaknesses in Audi's newly designed powertrain, crafted at the state-of-the-art facility in Neuburg. Compounding the difficulties, teammate Nico Hulkenberg faced a disheartening race day, unable to start due to technical malfunctions, while Bortoleto himself was sidelined in Q3, grappling with mechanical issues.

Despite these setbacks, Bortoleto remains optimistic, stating, “I have no doubt” when asked if Audi can improve its V6 engine. “I can't tell you when we're gonna be there, but I can tell you that we're gonna be there. If it's this year, if it's next year, I don't know, but I have full confidence that we're gonna be one of the top engine manufacturers in the future.” He outlined the understanding of current shortcomings, emphasizing, “There are teams doing this for 15 years, and we are in the first year of building an engine, so it's not easy.”

Adding fuel to the fire, team principal Jonathan Wheatley, a former key player at Red Bull, echoes this sentiment, recalling how Honda transformed their engines from underperformers to benchmarks in the 2020s. Wheatley is keenly aware of the rapid evolution of hybrid engines, asserting that the current phase in technical regulations represents one of the most significant changes in the sport's history. “The sophistication of the cars at Race 1 [of 2026] is going to be very different to Race 1 in 2030,” he noted.

The 2026 engine regulations are designed to level the playing field, offering struggling manufacturers like Audi a fighting chance with the Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) system. This innovative framework allows manufacturers whose engines fall short by 2% to 4% of the benchmark to access additional upgrades, while those lagging over 4% are granted even more. As the season progresses, the potential for Audi to enhance their power unit under this system could be pivotal.

However, looming uncertainties in the race calendar, particularly regarding the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia races due to regional conflicts, pose additional challenges. Wheatley commented, “At the moment, those two races are happening, and that's our focus.” He remains cautiously optimistic about the upcoming races, stating, “It's a little too early to say at the moment,” as they await the FIA's reassessment after every six races.

As the competition heats up, Audi’s approach to energy management and power recovery will be crucial in determining their future success. Bortoleto described the mental and physical exhaustion experienced during the race, emphasizing the intense strategic demands placed on drivers in this new era of racing. “It's fascinating to see the way the cars are using their energy around the lap,” he said, hinting at the complexities Audi must navigate to turn their ambitions into reality.

With an indomitable spirit and strategic vision, Audi is poised to make waves in Formula 1, transforming their initial struggles into a story of triumph and resilience. The world will be watching closely as they work tirelessly to secure their place among the elite in motorsport.
