Racing 36 grueling events each season is tough enough, but Bubba Wallace carries the added weight of being NASCAR’s sole full-time Black driver. Representing Michael Jordan’s 23XI Racing in the No. 23 Toyota Camry, Wallace has faced more than just challenges on the track—he’s endured personal trials that could break even the strongest among us. From the harrowing noose incident in his garage to wrestling with his mental health and watching his best friend, Ryan Blaney, claim the 2023 championship, Wallace’s resilience has been put to the ultimate test.
But through it all, Wallace has leaned on one unwavering pillar of support: his wife, Amanda Carter. Together since 2015, the high school sweethearts have grown through thick and thin, marrying on New Year’s Eve 2022 and welcoming their first child, Becks Hayden, on September 29, 2024. Now, as parents, their bond is stronger than ever, and Wallace credits this new chapter in his life as a turning point in his mental health and career.
A Season of Progress Amid Struggles
Wallace’s 2024 season showed clear improvement. He notched 14 top-10 finishes and six top-fives—an upward trend compared to 2023. However, challenges remained. A $50,000 penalty for door-slamming Alex Bowman took a toll, not just financially but emotionally. Wallace admitted to carrying a persona he wasn’t proud of, saying he had been “walking around with a chip on my shoulder.”
Despite those struggles, Wallace is learning to thrive, thanks in large part to the love and stability Amanda provides. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Wallace reflected, “When the mentals are in check… it’s surreal how good life can be. Doing it with your best friend is what life is all about. Thriving.”
A Decade-Long Bond That Grows Stronger
Wallace and Carter’s relationship has been a cornerstone of his success. Amanda herself has spoken about their deep connection, once saying, “We just have such a good bond. I love the time we spend together. We could sit around together all day every day and we don’t get tired of one another. He’s also handsome and charming.”
That bond has been essential in helping Wallace overcome the mental toll of racing. Wallace has publicly acknowledged how he sometimes let the pressures of the track affect their marriage but is working to turn the page. “I wasn’t the best husband,” he admitted. “I made her feel like she had to walk on eggshells after bad races. That’s not what it’s about. It’s about going home, getting a fresh reset, and being close to the people around you.”
Support From Legends and Loved Ones
Wallace’s circle of mentors includes some of the biggest names in sports. Michael Jordan has been instrumental in teaching him how to lead a team and control his emotions. NASCAR legend Kevin Harvick stepped in after Wallace’s controversy with Bowman, encouraging him to keep his chin up. But above all, Amanda remains his constant source of strength.
“I wake up and my wife’s there. She’s like, ‘How are you feeling today?’ We keep each other on our toes. We play video games together. She’s a massive help,” Wallace shared. “To my peeps out there staring at a blank wall, I’m with you. Tomorrow is another day. Another opportunity. Keep after it.”
Looking Ahead to 2025
With Amanda and their newborn son Becks by his side, Wallace is entering 2025 with renewed energy and optimism. After an emotionally taxing yet growth-filled year, he is poised to build on his progress and deliver some unforgettable performances on the track.
As Wallace put it, “It’s not just about what happens at the races—it’s about the people who ground you, who remind you why you love this life. That’s what makes the journey worth it.”
With his family as his anchor, the sky’s the limit for Bubba Wallace in 2025.
