After an almost perfect Friday for himself and Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso failed to score points in the Sprint race of the São Paulo Grand Prix in Formula 1. A touch from Esteban Ocon (Alpine) during the Sprint Shootout SQ1 prevented the two-time champion from advancing to SQ2, relegating him to 15th place on the grid.
From there, it was a recovery race yesterday at Interlagos, which ended close to the top eight that would have given access to points. The Spanish driver liked how the race unfolded, as he stated: ‘It was a fun Sprint, with a lot of wheel-to-wheel competition. Unfortunately, we didn’t score any points after gaining some positions, but the car seemed competitive, so it’s a good sign. We feel more competitive this weekend and we’re heading in the right direction’.
Regarding his expectations for the main race in São Paulo, Alonso commented: ‘It will be a close race and we know there are several fast cars around us, so let’s see if we can score good points’.
