The direct promotion of Andrea Kimi Antonelli from the Formula Regional European by Alpine (FRECA) to Formula 2 next year is really going to happen. The young Italian promise will join Prema.
At just 17 years old, Antonelli is one of the talents that has stood out in recent years, achieving almost immediate success in the transition from karting to single-seaters: he moved in 2021 and in his first full year in 2022, he won the titles in the Italian Formula 4 and ADAC Formula 4 championships. This year he dominated FRECA, as well as the Middle East Formula Regional, and also competed in the Italian GT Sprint Championship with a victory.
Linked to Mercedes as a junior driver, the Italian will now have the chance to compete in F2 in 2024, with Prema, which is one of the strongest teams in the promotion championships. Team principal René Rosin commented:
– We are proud to welcome Kimi to our Formula 2 team. He has been with us from the beginning, so not only do we know him very well, but we are also particularly proud of what he has been able to achieve in his first two full-time years in single-seaters. Kimi is a talented driver and a good team player, so we can’t wait to see what he will bring to the 2024 season and we are focused on helping him make the transition as smooth as possible.
