After a rocky start to the season, Will Power, the seasoned racer from Team Penske, managed to stage a remarkable comeback at the Thermal Club IndyCar Grand Prix. Despite a disappointing start, Power clawed his way back into the championship, demonstrating his sheer tenacity and driving prowess.
Power’s campaign was off to an inauspicious start when he was eliminated in the first lap at St. Petersburg. He left Florida occupying the penultimate 26th position in the championship, representing Team Penske Chevrolet. The 44-year-old veteran’s gloomy season prospects seemed to continue as the entire Penske crew fell short during the qualifying round at the Thermal Club IndyCar Grand Prix.
However, Power defied the odds, starting 21st on a road track notorious for its lack of overtaking opportunities. He tactfully maneuvered his way through the pack over 65 laps, demonstrating exceptional skill and strategy on a sweltering day devoid of caution periods. This impressive drive saw him finish the race in a commendable sixth place, effectively kick-starting his season.
“It was a significant day for the Verizon Chevy team; it was entirely green, with no lucky yellows in sight. This was all about displaying pure pace,” Power stated. He attributed this turn of fortunes to a well-crafted strategy and impressive speed. Despite being patient and calculated in overtaking his competitors, Power expressed his disappointment over the qualifying round, believing he should have been within the top 10.
The impressive sixth-place finish at Thermal, following the setback at St. Petersburg, catapulted Power to 14th in the Drivers’ Championship. He is now eyeing strong performances in the upcoming races at Long Beach and Barber Motorsports Park to secure a solid position within the top 10.
Power reflected on the race at Thermal as a good day, acknowledging that similar performances could pave the way for a championship win. He had the advantage of an extra set of faster alternate tires, courtesy of being eliminated in the initial qualifying round. This proved beneficial, especially compared to the race at St. Petersburg, where the alternate tires were too soft for race use.
With the alternate tires proving to be the preferred choice in the recent race, Power admitted to making a mistake during the qualifying lap. Despite this setback, he remained optimistic, reminding that in IndyCar, the tables can turn at any moment. His recent performance is a testament to this, showcasing his ability to keep a level head and persevere, even amid challenging circumstances.
