Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has hinted that Carlos Sainz may still have a path back to Maranello in the future, even as the team transitions to welcoming seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 season.

Vasseur on Sainz’s Future with Ferrari

Speaking about the possibility of Sainz rejoining Ferrari after his stint with Williams, Vasseur emphasized the fluid nature of Formula 1, where top talent often moves between teams.

“Of course, we have already talked a couple of times about this. This is a very small world. There are only 10 teams and only six or seven top drivers. You never know what is going to happen in the future,” Vasseur stated.

While keeping the door open, Vasseur stressed the importance of focusing on current projects. Ferrari is fully committed to its plans with Charles Leclerc and the incoming Hamilton, while Sainz looks forward to leading Williams’ resurgence.

“Both Carlos on his side and us on our side have to focus on our projects.”

Uncertain Long-Term Future at Ferrari

Vasseur acknowledged the unpredictability of F1, particularly beyond 2027, when Hamilton’s initial stint with Ferrari may conclude. He left open the possibility of a future reshuffle that could bring Sainz back into contention.

“We don’t know what will happen in 2027, 2028, 2029.”

Sainz’s Emotional Farewell to Ferrari

Sainz bid farewell to Ferrari after four seasons, which included multiple wins and significant contributions to the team’s Constructors’ Championship battles. Speaking after his final race with the team, where he secured a podium finish, Sainz reflected on his departure.

“Strange. A bit emotional, I’m not going to lie. It was more emotional the last time I jumped in the car, on the grid, knowing it was going to be my last race with a group of people I’ve enjoyed working with these last four years.”

What’s Next for Carlos Sainz?

The Spaniard is set to join Williams in 2025, a team undergoing a significant overhaul. With investments in technology and personnel, Williams is poised to provide Sainz with a competitive car as he transitions to a leadership role.

Ferrari’s Long-Term Strategy

Ferrari’s decision to bring in Hamilton signals its intent to win championships in the short term. However, Vasseur’s remarks highlight the team’s acknowledgment of Sainz’s value and the possibility of future reunions in a sport where talent often comes full circle.

With Hamilton’s tenure uncertain beyond his initial contract, Sainz’s potential return could align with Ferrari’s long-term vision, ensuring they remain flexible in an ever-changing driver market.
