From Uncertainty to Triumph: Franco Colapinto Secures Alpine F1 Seat for 2026
In an electrifying twist within the high-octane world of Formula 1, Franco Colapinto has emerged from a cloud of uncertainty to claim his spot as a full-time driver for Alpine in the 2026 season. Alpine Executive Advisor Flavio Briatore has shed light on the young Argentine’s remarkable mid-season metamorphosis that has turned heads and raised expectations.
Colapinto, only 22 years old, first made waves during a nine-race stint with Williams last season, showcasing his potential and talent. This impressive performance led to his recruitment by the Anglo-French team as a reserve driver at the beginning of this year. However, the journey has been anything but smooth. With rookie Jack Doohan struggling to make an impact in the A525, the decision to replace him with Colapinto ahead of the Imola Grand Prix weekend seemed like a gamble.
Despite the change, Colapinto’s initial results have been disheartening. With just four races left in the season, he has yet to score a single point, leaving many to question Alpine’s judgment in promoting him. Briatore even went so far as to suggest that bringing Colapinto into F1 might have been a “mistake.” But just when it seemed that all hope was lost, the tides turned dramatically ahead of the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, as Alpine officially confirmed Colapinto’s place for the upcoming season.
Briatore revealed that while Colapinto’s results have lagged behind due to the car’s shortcomings, the young driver has significantly improved his performance and is closing the gap with teammate Pierre Gasly. “What’s difficult for all these young kids is that they are arriving in this environment of Formula 1 with a lot of pressure from sponsors, the team, etc. Unfortunately, we have a not so performant car. It’s difficult to drive,” Briatore explained. He noted that Colapinto was initially “a little bit lost” but has since transformed into a more confident and committed driver, dedicating time to better understand his vehicle.
The relationship between Colapinto and Gasly is reportedly stronger than ever, with Briatore asserting, “Franco feels like he’s part of the team.” This shift has lightened the burden previously placed solely on Gasly’s shoulders, allowing both drivers to better share the weight of the team’s ambitions. As Alpine grapples with a challenging season, currently on track for its worst finish in a decade with just 20 points, the off-track dynamics are improving, providing a glimmer of hope for fans.
Looking ahead, Briatore has set the bar high. He is focused on delivering an improved car for both drivers in 2026, with Alpine poised to take advantage of new regulations to elevate its standing within the fiercely competitive midfield. “Now we need to keep stability. The team is growing, a lot of new engineers are arriving,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of building a strong foundation for the future.
With aspirations to climb the ranks and target a P6 finish next season, Briatore is confident that the combination of a strengthened engineering team and a powerful Mercedes engine will set the stage for a remarkable comeback. As the F1 world watches closely, Colapinto’s journey from uncertainty to a secured future with Alpine stands as a testament to perseverance and potential. The next chapter in his career promises to be nothing short of thrilling.
