Franco Colapinto’s Alpine Move: Williams Team Boss Sees F1 Grid Return on the Horizon

Franco Colapinto (ARG) Williams Racing. Formula 1 World Championship, Rd 17, Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Saturday 14th September 2024. Baku City Circuit, Azerbaijan.

Williams Racing team boss James Vowles has made it clear that releasing Franco Colapinto to Alpine is a strategic move designed to maximize the young Argentinian driver’s chances of securing a Formula 1 race seat in 2025 or 2026.

This decision comes after Colapinto’s standout performances during his nine-race stint with Williams in 2024, which proved his potential as a future star in the sport. Despite Williams boasting a formidable driver lineup with Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz for 2025, Vowles emphasized that the Alpine arrangement is a golden opportunity for Colapinto to carve his way back onto the F1 grid.

“A Pathway Back to F1”

“Over nine memorable races with Williams, Franco clearly showed he is deserving of a place in Formula 1,” Vowles said. “Williams has one of the most formidable driver line-ups on the grid for 2025 and beyond in Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz, so we believe this agreement with Alpine represents Franco’s best chance of securing a race seat in 2025 or 2026.”

Colapinto’s move to Alpine will see him join their test and reserve driver roster, a role that involves attending F1 races, testing previous cars, and contributing to simulator work. While he won’t immediately race, the move has sparked speculation that he could step into Jack Doohan’s seat if the Australian rookie fails to deliver in his debut campaign.

“Building a Legacy”

Vowles highlighted that Colapinto’s journey reflects the mission of the Williams Racing Driver Academy. “The Academy exists to discover and develop the F1 stars of the future, which is exactly what it has done in Franco’s case,” he said. “We are proud to have returned Argentina to the F1 grid and look forward to future battles on track.”

Colapinto’s tenure with Williams not only showcased his raw talent but also reignited Argentinian passion for Formula 1. His performances drew widespread praise, positioning him as one of the most exciting young talents in motorsport.

Briatore’s Vote of Confidence

Alpine’s executive advisor Flavio Briatore, who played a pivotal role in securing Colapinto, left no doubts about his belief in the driver’s abilities. “Clearly, Franco is among the best young talents in motorsport right now,” Briatore stated. “His appearance on the Formula 1 grid last year caught many, me included, by surprise, and his performances have been very impressive for a rookie driver.”

Briatore underlined that Colapinto’s arrival is part of Alpine’s long-term strategy. “We have an eye on our future, and his signing means we have a great pool of young drivers to call upon and work with in developing the team for future success,” he added.

What’s Next for Colapinto?

For now, the move positions Colapinto as a crucial asset for Alpine’s future while keeping the door open for a potential mid-season or 2026 race seat. With Alpine’s high expectations and Williams’ continued support, Colapinto is well-placed to capitalize on his rising trajectory.

Whether it’s replacing Doohan or securing a full-time seat in the coming years, the next chapter of Colapinto’s career promises to be just as thrilling as his breakout 2024 season.
