Williams rookie Franco Colapinto expressed his disappointment after narrowly missing out on a points finish at the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix, citing strategic errors that cost him crucial positions. In just his third F1 start, the young Argentine delivered an impressive performance, but a delayed pit stop left him finishing in 11th place, just outside the points.
A Strong Start Undone by Strategy
Colapinto started 12th on the grid and made an aggressive move up the inside at Turn 1, jumping to ninth and battling with Sergio Perez for much of the race. Despite defending valiantly, Colapinto lost out to Perez, who undercut him by pitting on Lap 28. Williams called Colapinto into the pits three laps later, allowing Carlos Sainz, who had pitted on Lap 14, to undercut both drivers and gain crucial positions.
“It’s a bit difficult not to finish in the points after a good effort, but it is what it is,” Colapinto reflected after the race. “We made some mistakes that didn’t let us finish in the points. By stopping a lap too late, we lost a place.”
Colapinto’s race was marked by strong tire management and an assertive driving style, but he admitted to struggling physically towards the end due to the challenging conditions. “Tyre management was good throughout the race, but I was struggling a bit physically which was more of a limiting factor,” Colapinto said. “Overall, P11 was still a decent result, and it was a very positive race to build on what I’ve learned so far.”
Williams Takes Responsibility for Strategy Call
Williams Team Principal James Vowles acknowledged the team’s role in Colapinto’s near-miss, praising the rookie’s performance while taking responsibility for the strategic call that cost him a points finish. Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Vowles stated, “This weekend, [Colapinto] did everything that he should have done within his power. Actually, it’s on us as to why we haven’t scored points.”
Vowles emphasized that Colapinto’s maturity and skill have been impressive in his brief F1 tenure, adding that there’s much more potential to unlock. “From Franco’s perspective, incredibly proud of what he’s doing and there’s more to come,” Vowles said.
Physical Challenges Add to the Test
Colapinto’s physical discomfort during the race was attributed to dehydration and stomach pains, a common issue in the hot and humid conditions of the Marina Bay Street Circuit. Despite these challenges, the rookie showed resilience and quickly recovered post-race.
“It’s a tough race,” Vowles noted. “He’s a little bit dehydrated and I think that’s what caused it, but he’s good. He’s back up on his feet and happy and smiling.”
Colapinto himself commented on the brutal conditions, stating, “It is really tough, really humid and hot. It’s difficult, you have no time to rest, there’s no straights, you’re always turning and there is no second to take a break.”
Building on a Promising Start
Despite the missed opportunity, Colapinto’s performance in Singapore highlighted his potential and adaptability in one of the most demanding races on the F1 calendar. As he continues to learn and grow in the sport, his confidence and racecraft are likely to develop further, positioning him as an exciting talent for Williams.
With his strong start to his F1 career, Colapinto is setting the stage for more impressive performances in the future. The team’s focus will be on refining their strategies to fully capitalize on his abilities, as they aim to convert promising drives into valuable points finishes.
