Franco Colapinto Makes F1 Debut at Monza: “No Pressure,” Says Albon

Franco Colapinto is set to make his highly anticipated Formula 1 debut this weekend at Monza, stepping in for Williams after the team decided to part ways with Logan Sargeant following the Dutch Grand Prix. The 20-year-old Argentine driver, who has been making waves in his rookie season in FIA Formula 2, will be competing in F1 for the remaining nine rounds of the year.

Alex Albon, Colapinto’s new teammate at Williams, has emphasized that the young driver can race without the burden of pressure. With Williams’ 2025 driver lineup already secured, including the arrival of Carlos Sainz on a multi-year deal, Albon believes Colapinto has the freedom to focus on gaining valuable experience rather than stressing over securing a future seat.

“I think in some ways it’s a nice thing that he’s got,” Albon said during Thursday’s Italian GP press conference. “He knows the seat’s not up for grabs next year. There’s no pressure in terms of having to deliver and not trying to get a seat for next year.”

Albon highlighted the benefits of Colapinto’s situation, noting that the experience gained in F1 could be invaluable, even if the Argentine returns to Formula 2 next year. “The things you learn in F1 can help you a lot… So just enjoy it,” he added.

Albon’s words were echoed by other drivers, including Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and McLaren’s Lando Norris, who also expressed their support and encouragement for Colapinto.

Perez acknowledged the challenges ahead for Colapinto but stressed the importance of seizing the opportunity: “It’s a massive challenge… but when you get the opportunity, you have to go for it.” He also noted that racing alongside Albon and experiencing the F1 environment firsthand will significantly accelerate Colapinto’s learning curve.

Norris, while offering positive words, also pointed out the potential difficulties of entering the F1 season mid-way. “I think the more difficult part of coming in mid-season is just we’re on top of everything,” Norris said. “For him, it’s the complete opposite almost… But he’s here for a reason because he’s talented and he’s a very good kid.”

Despite the challenges, Albon believes Monza is the ideal venue for Colapinto’s debut, describing it as one of the more “forgiving” tracks compared to the likes of Baku or Singapore.

Colapinto’s debut at the iconic Temple of Speed comes at a time when the Williams team is eager to maximize its performance. With a car that performs well in low-drag setups, there is optimism that Colapinto could make a strong impression in his first F1 outing. As the weekend unfolds, all eyes will be on the young Argentine as he takes on one of motorsport’s greatest stages.
