Franco Colapinto Makes Bold Alpine Move After Stellar Rookie Season with Williams: “I am super excited to join Alpine F1 Team”

In a major shake-up in the Formula 1 paddock, 21-year-old Argentine sensation Franco Colapinto has officially transitioned to Alpine as a Test and Reserve Driver for the 2025 season. The move follows a remarkable nine-race stint with Williams in 2024, where Colapinto made history and showcased his immense potential.

Argentina’s Return to F1 Glory

Colapinto became the first Argentine to compete in F1 in 23 years when he debuted at the 2024 Italian Grand Prix, thrilling fans in his home country. He wasted no time proving his mettle, scoring points in just his second race at Baku with a stellar eighth-place finish and securing another points-scoring finish at the United States Grand Prix.

Williams’ Farewell and Endorsement

James Vowles, Williams’ Team Principal, was effusive in his praise for Colapinto, describing his performances as “memorable” and commending the young driver’s ability to make an impact on the F1 stage. While Williams boasts a formidable 2025 lineup with Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz, Vowles acknowledged that Alpine presents Colapinto with his best chance to secure a full-time race seat in the near future.

“We are proud to have returned Argentina to the F1 grid,” said Vowles. “Franco’s agreement with Alpine ensures his talent will continue to be nurtured, and we look forward to future battles on track.”

Colapinto’s Journey and Gratitude

Colapinto expressed his excitement about the new chapter with Alpine, emphasizing his gratitude to Williams for giving him his F1 break.

“Williams turned my dream of racing in Formula One into reality,” Colapinto said. “Now, it’s time for a new chapter with Alpine, and I’m ready to embrace the challenge and make Argentina proud.”

The young driver also took a moment to thank his sponsors and the passionate Argentine fanbase, whose unwavering support has fueled his rapid rise.

Alpine’s Vision: Briatore’s Confidence

Alpine’s executive advisor Flavio Briatore is already placing significant trust in Colapinto’s abilities.

“Franco is among the best young talents in motorsport right now,” Briatore declared. “His rookie performances caught many by surprise, and his addition strengthens our pool of young talent for future success.”

Despite current commitments to Pierre Gasly and Jack Doohan as Alpine’s 2025 drivers, rumors swirl that Colapinto could be in line to replace Doohan sooner rather than later. Reports from Argentina suggest that Colapinto might even line up for Alpine at the season opener in Melbourne.

What’s Next for Colapinto?

As Colapinto transitions to his new role, he will attend F1 races, participate in Alpine’s Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) program, and contribute to simulator development at the team’s Enstone headquarters. This is a significant step in positioning him as a future race seat contender.

The Bigger Picture

Colapinto’s move reflects Alpine’s long-term strategy of fostering top-tier talent, while Williams can take pride in nurturing another rising star. Whether Colapinto replaces Doohan or continues as a reserve for now, his trajectory points toward an impactful F1 career. The young Argentine’s journey is far from over, and fans across the globe will be watching closely.
