Franco Colapinto faces backlash after dramatic ‘asleep’ accusation in Max Verstappen incident

Franco Colapinto in Hot Water After Shocking Max Verstappen Incident at Japanese Grand Prix

In a dramatic turn of events during the second practice session at the iconic Suzuka circuit, Franco Colapinto has found himself in the eye of a storm after a reckless encounter with reigning champion Max Verstappen. Just 20 minutes into the session, the young Argentine driver, behind the wheel of his Alpine, was observed weaving along the straight, a dangerous maneuver that would soon lead to chaos.

As Verstappen approached with blistering speed, he was forced to slam on the brakes to avoid a collision, a moment that has now been described by F1 analyst Karun Chandhok as a case of Colapinto being “asleep” at the wheel. This incident, deemed “unacceptable,” has drawn the ire of the stewards, who have issued a stern warning to Colapinto for his erratic driving and for allegedly impeding Verstappen during a critical lap.

The stewards’ report paints a vivid picture of the incident: “Car 43 was weaving across the track, warming tires on the straight between turns 14 and 15 when car 3 approached at high speed.” It was revealed that Colapinto had been warned multiple times over team radio about the impending threat from Verstappen. Despite this, he failed to react appropriately. As Verstappen closed in, Colapinto ceased his weaving but remained firmly on the racing line, leading to a catastrophic closing speed that forced Verstappen to abandon his push lap entirely.

Colapinto himself admitted to misjudging the situation, stating he had attempted to accelerate to avoid impeding Verstappen but simply lacked the power to do so. Verstappen's expectation was clear: he anticipated that Colapinto would move left, a maneuver that never occurred, forcing him to abandon his lap in frustration.

The stewards, unimpressed by Colapinto's explanation, declared that he had unnecessarily impeded Verstappen and issued the standard penalty for such an infraction during a practice session: a warning. This incident not only raises questions about Colapinto’s awareness on the track but also serves as a wake-up call about the critical importance of vigilance and communication in the high-stakes world of Formula 1 racing.

As the dust settles from this tense moment, all eyes will be on Colapinto to see how he responds in the upcoming sessions. Will he learn from this blunder, or will it haunt him as he fights for his place in the fast-paced world of Formula 1? One thing is for sure: the stakes have never been higher, and the pressure is on for the young driver to prove he can handle the heat.
