Franco Colapinto's Bahrain Debacle: Car Troubles Plague Alpine's New Star on Day One of Testing
In a stunning display of misfortune, Franco Colapinto's inaugural day at the Formula 1 Bahrain test was marred by significant car issues, leaving the rising star stranded in the garage for the better part of the day. As the Argentinian driver embarks on his first full season with Alpine in 2026, the stakes have never been higher—and neither has the pressure to perform.
The morning session kicked off with disastrous results. Colapinto's new Alpine A526 came to an abrupt halt on the track, forcing the team to scramble and retrieve the vehicle, effectively derailing any hopes of gathering crucial data during the session. The young driver returned later in the day, but the lost track time was a heavy blow to his preparations for the season ahead.
“We had some problems with the car in the morning,” Colapinto revealed to the media, including Motorsport Week. “Yeah, I didn’t do any laps, well. It’s part of testing, you know, and it’s part of new cars, and it’s new car things, so we are learning all together, and hopefully, you know, we can learn from those and just not let it be a pain.”
Despite the setbacks, Colapinto displayed remarkable resilience and optimism. He was quick to clarify that the issues plaguing the A526 were not related to Alpine's new engine partner, Mercedes, although he refrained from diving into specifics about the car troubles. “No, it’s just car problems; we’ve had some issues,” he stated, keeping the focus on the immediate challenges ahead.
With Alpine finishing at the bottom of the Constructors' Championship last season, the pressure for improvement is palpable. Colapinto remains hopeful that the team's ongoing efforts will yield positive results. “There are many things that changed,” he shared regarding the team's evolution. “I think the car looks in a decent place. Of course, having the same power unit as three teams helps a lot to have that data.”
The young driver emphasized the importance of collaboration and data-sharing with other teams using the same power unit, noting, “Being able to not only be yourself with the same PU, but having comparisons and having a lot more data, especially on the rear tires, hopefully all that helps and we can make a step.”
As the drama of the first day unfolds, all eyes are on Franco Colapinto and Alpine. Will they bounce back from this rocky start? The clock is ticking, and the anticipation is building as the team gears up for a season that promises to be both challenging and exhilarating. Stay tuned as we watch this saga unfold on the racetrack!
