SHOCKING CRASH AT SHANGHAI OPENS F1 SEASON: DRIVER IN SURGERY, RACE ABANDONED!

In a jaw-dropping turn of events at the season opener for the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia in Shanghai, a catastrophic crash has left fans and participants in disbelief. Francis Tjia, the unfortunate driver of Car #21, is currently recovering in the hospital after undergoing successful surgery following a terrifying collision that unfolded in the early moments of the race.

As the chaos erupted, Naquib Azlan, who had started from pole position, found himself caught in a precarious situation. A slow start led to a chaotic chain reaction as multiple cars were involved in the mayhem. Tjia's vehicle slammed into the back of Azlan's before careening off and crashing into the unforgiving wall. The incident was so severe that it forced race officials to abandon the event entirely.

Initial reports from the circuit's medical center indicated that Tjia was conscious and alert, but the severity of his injuries necessitated further medical intervention. It has now been confirmed that he underwent minor surgery at Huashan Hospital, and the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia team has expressed relief at Tjia's recovery, stating, “The driver is recovering well, and everyone at Porsche Carrera Cup Asia is wishing him a speedy recovery and hopes to see him back on track soon.”

In a lighter note amidst the chaos, Naquib Azlan reported that he emerged from the incident unscathed. “I’m sure most of you saw the shunt, thankfully I came away okay and safe,” he said. Azlan also extended his thoughts to Tjia, adding, “I heard as well from an update that the other guy, car number 21, driven by Francis [Tjia], he’s doing okay too after being checked out at the hospital, so ultimately that’s the most important part. Everyone came away from the incident safe.”

The aftermath of the crash has led to the official abandonment of the season opener. A statement from the series read, “Following the on-track incident during Round 1 of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia 2026 season in Shanghai, the race was not resumed and Round 1 was therefore officially abandoned.” In accordance with the championship's regulations, competitors will receive 50% of the championship points based on the qualifying results.

Fans will have to wait for the next opportunity to see the action on track, with Round 2 scheduled for Sunday, March 15, 2026. The motorsport community is rallying behind Tjia, hoping for his swift return to racing as the season unfolds.
