Almost six months later, Formula E returns this weekend for the 2023/2024 season – which, despite the designation, will only be in 2024. Find out what’s new for the upcoming season.
Drivers and teams
The reigning champion is Jake Dennis, who continues with Andretti driving a Porsche… now with a new teammate, Norman Nato, who was with Nissan last year. In the Japanese team, Sacha Fenestraz stays and Oliver Rowland returns, who competed in the first nine rounds of the previous season for Mahindra.
The Indian manufacturer opted for a complete overhaul, now having the returning Nyck de Vries (champion of 2021) and Edoardo Mortara, coming from Maserati MSG Racing. The Trident manufacturer retains Maximilian Günther and welcomes rookie Jehan Daruvala. Jaguar continues with Mitch Evans and now has Nick Cassidy from Envision Racing, which in turn recovers Robin Frijns and keeps Sébastien Buemi.
NIO 333 changed its name to ERT, but does not change drivers Dan Ticktum and Sérgio Sette Câmara, while NEOM McLaren saw René Rast leave and bet on Sam Bird… who left Jaguar. Abt Cupra continues with Nico Müller, but the other spot will be filled by one of the championship regulars: Lucas di Grassi, who was with Mahindra in 2023.
The two driver pairings that remain are: DS Penske (Jean-Eric Vergne/Stoffel Vandoorne) and Porsche (António Félix da Costa/Pascal Wehrlein).
Calendar
In general, almost all the rounds of 2023 will transition to 2024, but there are exceptions. Last week, the Hyderabad ePrix in India was canceled due to an alleged contractual failure on the part of the local organization, and thus the second edition will not take place. Cape Town (South Africa) and Jakarta (Indonesia) are also out, making way for Tokyo (Japan) and Shanghai (China). The location of the Italian round changes, leaving the streets of Rome to be held at the Misano circuit. The end of the season is once again in London, on July 20 and 21.
Regulations
The rules also have news for 2024. Starting from Misano, the Attack Charge format will be introduced, in which drivers have to make a mandatory pit stop during the race for fast charging. There will be a specific period of the race to do it, and a minimum time must be respected for safety reasons. After that, drivers have two attack modes and can use an extra 4kWh of power until the end of the race.
