Fórmula E está vivenciando uma segunda onda de fabricantes entrando no esporte após o recente anúncio da Lola?

Potential resurgence in the Formula E manufacturers’ lineup is on the horizon? The expected inclusion of Lola in the upcoming season, and possibly in the Gen4 era as well, may pique the interest of other companies looking to enter the world of electric motorsport. By gradually revealing its technical roadmap and maintaining its relevance in the automotive industry, Formula E has created an attractive environment for new manufacturers. Lola is ready to join the ranks of Jaguar, Nissan, Porsche, DS, Mahindra, Maserati, and ERT, becoming the first new manufacturer to enter Formula E since Porsche in 2019.

The reasons for the lack of new manufacturers in recent years can be attributed to various factors. Formula E faced significant challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected the series more than others. The departure of BMW, Audi, and Mercedes during this difficult period also had a major impact. However, Formula E’s ability to survive is due to its strong lineup of manufacturers and the presence of independent teams that have thrived in the manufacturer supply culture.

Financial regulations were introduced to provide stability and facilitate manufacturers’ board approval regarding their marketing expenses, which are separate from the budget cap. While this is not a solution to all challenges, it has given independent teams the confidence to compete with their larger manufacturer counterparts, as demonstrated by Envision’s victory in last year’s team championship and the success of Maserati and Andretti.

The true value that new manufacturers and teams can get from Formula E is difficult to quantify. Some teams are facing financial difficulties and need immediate support. In the short term, this support usually comes from favors granted by the promoter. Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds recently revealed that there are ongoing discussions with three interested parties considering joining the championship as new manufacturers. These discussions are not speculative, but genuine expressions of interest.

Lola is rumored to be among the interested parties, along with other names that have already shown interest, such as BYD, Geely, and Hyundai. Hyundai’s possible entry into Formula E aligns with its ambitious goal of selling 1.87 million battery electric vehicles annually by 2030. The possibility of Hyundai shifting its focus from rallying to circuit racing under the leadership of Cyril Abiteboul also increases speculation. The decisions of Lola, Porsche, and Mahindra on whether to continue in Formula E are likely to coincide and serve as a turning point for the championship.

Formula E has struggled to fill the grid spots left by Audi. The valuation of these spots is uncertain, with estimates ranging from €8 million to €13 million. Potential new entrants have hesitated to disrupt the value of existing teams, and no brand has yet emerged as sufficiently convincing to make commitments. However, Formula E recognizes that certain names are inherently more attractive than others, although it is worth noting that brands like Mahindra and DS were not widely recognized before entering Formula E.

The Formula E grid can be divided into three groups: prestigious manufacturers like Porsche, Jaguar, and Nissan; a mix of boutique manufacturers like Mahindra, DS, ERT, and Maserati; and independent teams with experience working with manufacturers like Envision, McLaren, Abt, and Andretti. Top-tier manufacturers are likely to continue in the Gen4 era, while mid-level manufacturers are relatively stable. However, Maserati’s MSG team is facing difficulties, and ERT and Abt are facing important decisions regarding their future.

Formula E remains cautiously optimistic about the future structure of the grid. Teams that prioritize research and development or have the right investors, partners, and sponsors are confident in their participation in Gen4. Formula E aims to support teams facing challenges and connect them to potential partners or sponsors. The championship also acts as a matchmaker, introducing teams and manufacturers to each other to ensure a healthy grid. The goal is to have a grid filled with financially stable teams that can focus on racing without distractions.

In the end, the success of Formula E will be measured by the number of healthy teams on the grid and by potential new entrants waiting to rejuvenate or replace them.
