Formula E is doubling down on its commitment to fostering the next generation of motorsport talent with a dedicated rookie practice session set to take place on Thursday, February 13, ahead of the 2024-25 season’s Jeddah E-Prix. This groundbreaking initiative offers drivers who haven’t yet competed in Formula E the chance to get behind the wheel of the cutting-edge GEN3 Evo car.

A Platform for Rising Stars

This 40-minute session, following the successful Women’s Test held at Jarama during pre-season, underscores Formula E’s ambition to create pathways for up-and-coming drivers, including women, in the fiercely competitive world of electric racing.

“It’s a crucial next step in fulfilling our commitment to nurturing the next generation of racing talent, including young women,” said Formula E co-founder and chief championship officer Alberto Longo. “We believe this opportunity to drive the GEN3 Evo car will significantly contribute to developing the future stars of Formula E and motorsport as a whole.”

Key Details About the Rookie Session

  • Eligibility: Open to drivers who have not yet competed in a Formula E race.
  • Car Allocation: Each team must nominate one rookie driver and allocate a unique car number distinct from their race entries.
  • Confirmation Deadline: Teams must finalize and announce their selected rookie no later than seven days before the session.

Unlike the Women’s Test, where some teams ran two drivers, the rookie session limits teams to a single car, ensuring all participants have ample track time.

Formula E’s Dedication to Development

The rookie practice is the latest in a series of efforts by Formula E to promote driver development. Last season, the championship hosted an in-season rookie test following the Berlin E-Prix, providing invaluable experience to emerging talents.

“Many of Formula E’s current stars gained their first experience through these rookie sessions,” said Pablo Martino, head of Formula E at the FIA. “Providing opportunities to understand the nuances of Formula E and EV racing is critical to our championship’s growth.”

Jeddah E-Prix: A Weekend of Firsts

The Jeddah E-Prix, now moving from Diriyah to the Jeddah Formula 1 circuit, promises an exhilarating weekend of innovation and competition:

  • In-Race Charging Debut: One of the two races will feature mandatory 30-second pit stops, enabling drivers to gain 10% additional usable energy. This marks a significant technological leap for the championship.
  • Enhanced Accessibility: Hosting the rookie session at a high-profile event like Jeddah emphasizes Formula E’s efforts to integrate fresh talent into the main stage of electric racing.

Impact and Anticipation

This initiative not only highlights Formula E’s dedication to inclusivity and development but also sets a precedent for other championships to provide hands-on opportunities for young drivers. With teams required to participate, the session could unveil future stars who may soon take their place on the grid alongside established names.

As Formula E continues to innovate both on and off the track, the Jeddah E-Prix and its rookie practice session are set to solidify the series’ position as a leader in developing the next era of motorsport talent.
