Formula E has a contingency plan for canceled races.

Fórmula E tem plano de contingência para corridas canceladas.

Formula E is exploring the idea of having a single backup race in case of event cancellations, even with short notice. In recent seasons, the championship has faced challenges with local politics and promoter difficulties, resulting in the cancellation of races in Vancouver and Hyderabad. Last season, the cancellation of the Vancouver stage led to a last-minute replacement race in Marrakesh. However, this season, there is no replacement for the race in Hyderabad, leaving Formula E with a seven-week gap in its calendar. This not only affected the momentum of the season, but also prevented Formula E from capitalizing on the good media numbers from previous races. Formula E is now considering the option of pre-scheduling fixed circuits as a contingency plan to avoid such disruptions in the future.

Formula E acknowledges that logistics are complex and does not want to become just a permanent series of circuit races. Its goal is to take its product to city center or near-city center facilities, whether temporary or semi-permanent. However, Formula E cannot afford to have large gaps in its calendar, as this is detrimental to the championship. Therefore, the idea of a replacement event is being considered. The location for this event has not yet been determined, but the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia is a potential option. Valencia has previously served as a logistics and operations center for Formula E and hosted pre-season tests and a two-stage race at a permanent facility. However, the challenge lies in the logistics of transporting everything to the replacement site, especially if it is on the other side of the world. Formula E may need to consider holding replacement events in different regions, such as Asia and Europe.

The São Paulo E-Prix, taking place this weekend, could potentially be the first of two races held this year. São Paulo is also being considered as a potential location to kick off the 2024-25 season. A South and North American leg is currently the favorite to start the next campaign, which could begin at the end of November or early December. Formula E is aiming to have its largest calendar ever for its 11th season, with the possibility of up to 18 races in the Gen3 Evo era. Negotiations are underway with a new venue in the United States, possibly within or near the Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles, for a race in December 2024 or January 2025. Los Angeles is seen as an attractive city for a race due to the presence of shareholders and investors based in North America. However, Formula E is also exploring other options in North America, considering the growing interest in single-seater racing outside of IndyCar.

Overall, Formula E is aware of the challenges it faces in hosting street races in major cities. While it wants to maintain its unique downtown approach, it also recognizes the need for a backup plan to avoid disruptions and large gaps in its calendar. The championship is exploring the possibility of pre-booking fixed circuits as substitute events and is considering various locations, including Valencia and potential sites in Asia and Europe. Additionally, Formula E is looking to expand its presence in North America, with Los Angeles being a strong contender. The goal is to have a robust calendar with multiple races and engage new audiences in different regions.
