Formula 1 anticipates that teams will request an increase in funding under the updated Concorde Agreement.

Fórmula 1 antecipa que equipes solicitarão aumento de financiamento sob o Acordo de Concórdia atualizado.

President and CEO of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali, and President and CEO of Liberty Media Corporation, Greg Maffei, are pictured on the grid during the Mexico Grand Prix in Mexico City. As the 2026 Concord Agreement for Formula 1 approaches, Maffei anticipates challenging negotiations with the teams. This agreement, involving the FIA, the Formula 1 Group, and the teams, will coincide with the introduction of new technical regulations. It covers important aspects such as prize money distribution, commercial rights, and limiting the number of teams on the grid. The latter point is particularly controversial as Andretti expresses a desire to join the grid by 2026. This will be the second Concord Agreement negotiated by Liberty Media, with the first agreed in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Maffei, in a podcast with James Allen, acknowledges the teams’ desire to capitalize on the current popularity and commercial success of the sport, making negotiations challenging. He credits the leadership of Chase Carey and Stefano Domenicali for setting a transparent and inclusive tone for the negotiations. However, he expects disagreements on financial issues, as both the teams and Liberty Media are likely to seek to maximize their financial gains.

Despite potential discussions between the teams and the F1 Management Group, Maffei remains hopeful that negotiations are heading in the right direction for all parties involved in the agreement.

“However, overall, there is a positive feeling and consensus, and things are progressing smoothly. It is in our collective interest to establish a solid agreement.

“There have been cases in the past where races started without a mutually agreed corporate agreement. But now, with several years before it expires, we are confident we will finalize it in advance.”

Another significant aspect of the Concord Agreement is the limitation on the number of races. Many drivers and team members have expressed concerns about the demanding nature of a 24-race calendar for team personnel, attending journalists, and everyone working within the F1 paddock.

Maffei explained that, while F1 is constantly exploring new opportunities, especially in Asia, it has no plans to exceed the current limit of 24 races per year.

“We had a successful race in China this year. I believe there is potential in Southeast Asia,” he said.

“We have received interest from countries like Thailand, Indonesia, and South Korea. Can we accommodate all of them at this time? No, we are restricted. We will not exceed 24 races; that is set.”

“Although the Concord Agreement allows for up to 25 races, there is a consensus that 24 is the maximum number we will have.”

The CEO of Liberty Media also acknowledged that they are seeking to find a balance between traditional circuits and new locations, such as Las Vegas or Miami.

“Therefore, we are considering how to maintain the historic venues while incorporating new races.

“These are challenges because everyone wants to host a race. That is the positive aspect. Determining who will have the right to host a race is exciting for fans and contributes to the growth of the sport.

“It is crucial to find a balance that provides a great experience for fans, generates substantial revenue for teams, and facilitates growth.”
