Max Verstappen, a 26-year-old F1 sensation, has already achieved the remarkable feat of becoming a three-time world champion in the sport. Currently reigning as the top competitor, he has consistently outperformed his rivals within the current regulations. However, a former Red Bull driver, whose name is omitted, doubts Verstappen’s ability to sustain his career as long as Hamilton.
Despite being 39 years old, Lewis Hamilton continues to excel and has not lost any of his electrifying speed. When he joins Ferrari next year at the age of 40, it is evident that Hamilton still possesses the desire to compete at the highest level. David Coulthard, expressing his thoughts in an interview with Motorsports Total, suggests that Verstappen may not have the endurance to race in his 30s.
Coulthard states, “So, at 26 years old, one could argue that Verstappen has at least another solid five years ahead of him, although some individuals may decline earlier…” He believes that Verstappen will continue to be a formidable presence in Formula 1 for as long as he desires. However, Coulthard questions whether Verstappen will eventually choose to pursue other endeavors outside of F1.
While Coulthard downplays the likelihood of Verstappen continuing his F1 career into his 30s, it is worth noting that Verstappen and Hamilton have not had many encounters on the track recently. The last time they faced each other was in the 2021 season. Furthermore, the current regulations have made it difficult for Verstappen and Hamilton to engage in thrilling wheel-to-wheel battles, as Mercedes has faced difficulties on the grid.
The unfortunate conclusion of their rivalry in Abu Dhabi in 2021 remains etched in the memories of fans. As the 2024 F1 season approaches, with Hamilton’s final season with Mercedes, he will certainly seek to leave a lasting impression. However, whether he can challenge Verstappen for the world championship will only become clear after the first races.
